WASHINGTON -- For a firm in the business of famously promoting its clients, R&R Partners arrived in the nation's capital rather quietly in January.
The Las Vegas advertising and consulting firm -- the minds behind the slogan "what happens here, stays here" -- launched a lobbying business in Washington without the customary big wine and dine reception.
The subdued rollout was intentional. R&R Partners was hanging out its shingle at a time when official Washington was in a frenzy fueled by the guilty plea of lobbyist Jack Abramoff on public corruption charges.
"Right now, honestly, the mood toward, quote, lobbyists, is not very good," said Mike Pieper, director of R&R's two-person Washington office. "We're trying to make a point that we're low-key and low-profile."
Nonetheless, R&R joined a growth industry that many believe is not slowed by periodic scandals like those surrounding Abramoff and former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham of California, who admitted taking at least $2.4 million in bribes from a defense contractor.
