CNN/AP: Radio still uneasy with Dixie Chicks
Radio still uneasy with Dixie Chicks
'I think a lot of people are in a wait-and-see mode'
Monday, March 27, 2006

The Dixie Chicks: Emily Robison, left, Natalie Maines, center, and Martie Maguire.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Country radio may be ready to make nice with the Dixie Chicks.

The grudge dates back to 2003 when many country stations stopped playing the popular trio after lead singer Natalie Maines criticized President Bush.

But the Chicks' new single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," is now in rotation in several major markets, pushing it to No. 36 on Billboard's country singles chart after its first full week of airplay. Other stations, however, have been slower to embrace it.

The first single....addresses the controversy head on, with Maines singing in the chorus, "I'm not ready to make nice. I'm not ready to back down. I'm still mad as hell and I don't have time to go round and round and round."

She also sings, "How in the world can the words that I said send somebody so over the edge," and "I made my bed and I sleep like a baby."...

Like commercial radio even matters anymore...(there's)...XM, Crosscountry...

And don't forget how badly commerical radio "dixie chicked" the Dixie Chicks the last time: Their album went sextuple platinum, and their tour sold out! If their song's in the Top Forty in major markets, they've already won.

8. Not everyone can afford...
XM or other satellite radio services, or iPods for podcasting...what I hope is that their new album is a good one, and they again sell out their shows on tour. From what I've heard, that's where many groups make much of their money anyway. I'm glad they're not backing down, this will be an inspiration for others to stand up, speak the truth, inspire, and survive.

My wife loves the Dixie Chicks, by the way, and I'm hoping we'll see them when they come round the Pacific Northwest :)

6. I like XM's programming but their sound quality is SO bad right now
I just signed up in January but their sound quality over the last three weeks or so has really gone down hill fast. I almost can't listen to it because the sound quality is so poor. They really need to consolidate their channel lineup a bit and they can start with all of the sports nonsense.

3. I've noticed the stations are uneasy
At work I'm forced to listen to my coworkers' radios which are all tuned to the local Clear Channel "country" music channel. After listening to it every work day for approximately 8 hours over past few months, I can't say I can remember hearing the Dixie Chicks being played once. It's the most banal lineup, too... They do not even have enough songs to fill up eight hours without repeating some crap songs multiple times a day. Every time I hear "Jesus Take the Wheel," it makes me want to drive a screwdriver into my skull because they play it so often. "Jesus Take the Wheel and Drive Us Into a God Damn Bridge Abutment" is more like it.

7. And how on earth did Carrie Underwood become a country singer??
Maybe I missed something somewhere along the line, but she's about as country as oh, say, Faith Hill is nowadays. VH1 Country (my guilty pleasure) plays a lot of Dixie Chicks videos and their "Travelin' Soldier" never fails to get to me. So sad, not to mention timely. Keep speaking the truth, Chicks!

4. After all is said and done, Natalie Maines was right
in her prediction of how the war would turn out: thousands of innocent Iraqis have ended up getting killed, along with a lot of our troops. And we now know that Bush didn't pursue "every viable option" other than war, that he was hellbent on invasion all along. Finally, when she said that she was "ashamed that President Bush is from Texas" -- how many Texans can truly say at this present time they are still proud of their president?
