PHILADELPHIA -- W. Dean Singleton's MediaNews Group Inc. still hadn't decided as of late Monday whether it would bid for 12 Knight Ridder newspapers by Tuesday's deadline.
"It's a very fluid situation. We're trying to get updated numbers," Joseph "Jody" Lodovic, president of Denver-based MediaNews, said Monday evening. "Until 5 o'clock
when we press the button, we're still not decided where we're headed."
If MediaNews does bid, it's not expecting to get an immediate final answer from McClatchy Co., which this month agreed to buy Knight Ridder, owner of 32 daily newspapers. "I'm sure it will take weeks to iron out the details and the issues," Lodovic said. '
MediaNews is one of a small group of companies with a clear shot at the 12 papers McClatchy wants to sell after buying Knight Ridder in a deal scheduled to close this summer. The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and San Jose Mercury News are among the papers being put up for sale.
