DeLay Says Justices 'Don't Get' Criticism

WASHINGTON - Republican Rep. Tom DeLay said Tuesday that former and current Supreme Court Justices
Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg "don't get it" when they complain about conservative criticism of judges.

"All wisdom doesn't reside in ... people in black robes," DeLay said.

In recent weeks, O'Connor has said the criticism has threatened judicial independence to deal with difficult issues such as gay marriage. Ginsburg said in a speech that a Web threat against her and O'Connor was apparently prompted by Republican proposals in Congress that tell judges to stop relying on foreign laws or court decisions.

Ginsburg said such actions by Congress "fuel the irrational fringe."

8. Being a judge

or a justice does not, and should not, immunize you from criticism. And not one person here on DU believes that it does. Did, or did not, the Supreme Court select George "Chimpy" Bush as President of the Untied States? Did, or did not, everybody and his kid sister on DU criticize them for it? In fact, why, exactly, was DU founded?

If we can criticize the Court's decisions, we can hardly deny our conservative opponents the right to do so, too. Black robes don't turn them into little tin gods, and if they're wrong, they can do a lot of damage. Think "choice". Think "Patriot Act".

If they can't stand the heat, they should get out of the kitchen. A favorite saying of Harry Truman. We should never, never, never, let others decide what is right without criticism if we know it to be wrong.

14. True. However, DeLay & Co go beyond criticizing the Court's

decisions. They make veiled (and not-so-veiled) threats. As much as I despise some SCOTUS decisions, they are our last line of defense against the whackos and they were never intended to be "accountable" to DeLay and his ilk.

"We have been chosen to live as Christians at a time when our culture is being poisoned and our world is being threatened," the former House majority leader told a "War on Christians" conference. "The enemies of virtue may be on the march, but they have not won," he said.

There are those who would say Tom DeLay lost his job as House majority leader because he was indicted by a Texas grand jury on charges of money laundering and conspiracy, or because of his extensive ties to lawbreaking lobbyist Jack Abramoff. But they would be wrong.

In fact, the Texas Republican fell from power because he is a Christian.

That, at least, is the view of Rick Scarborough, convener of a conference this week called "The War on Christians."

"I believe the most damaging thing that Tom DeLay has done in his life is take his faith seriously into public office, which made him a target for all those who despise the cause of Christ," Scarborough said, introducing DeLay yesterday. When DeLay finished, the host reminded the politician: "God always does his best work right after a crucifixion."

A Challenge: try to read this article without shaking your head in disbelief. I didn't think anything could be stupider than the phony "War On Christmas" but boy, was I wrong.

These people are absolutely desperate to think of themselves as persecuted victims, without the slightest regard for their true standing in our society, or the standing they would have if they didn't pull crazy stunts like "Justice Sunday" and this asinine "War on Christians" BS.

Read the article to hear the desperation. For example, among the affronts to Christians that they cite to demonstrate the existence of this "war" is a remark Ted Turner made 17 years ago and a CBS employee who described Gary Bauer as a "little nut" in 1999.
