13-year-old boy charged for threatening Bush
Associated Press
Posted online: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 1436 hours IST

http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=65131

Florence, March 29: A 13-year-old boy was charged with threatening President George W Bush - who is scheduled to travel to nearby Cincinnati next week - in two e-mails sent to the Mayor, police said.

Investigators did not find anything in a search of the boy's home to make them think he was planning to carry out the alleged threats, police captain Linny Cloyd said.

The teen was in the custody of his mother at their home on Tuesday. He faces one felony count of making a terroristic threat and is to appear in Boone county family court within two weeks.

SNIP

Police said the first e-mail was also sent to the white house, Vice President Dick Cheney and the Pentagon.

3. To me
there's nothing amusing about what this kid did. I doubt anyone on DU would find it at all amusing if he e-mailed the threat to Clinton when he was President or to Sen Boxer or Feingold. WQhat this kid did is a crime and there should be some punishment for what he did.
If he was serious he needs help. If he did it to be funny, he needs to lose his e-mailing priviledges for quite some time among other things.

11. it is probable that had this kid mailed something like that to clinton, or
boxer, or feingold he would not have been criminally charged with threatening them. his parents may have been told of the threat and a family council might have ensued, out of which, some therapy might have resulted, or perhaps just a way for the kid to express himself, through his right of freedom of expression in a constructive way, through writing and publishing some oped-piece in some newspaper.

the kid has had it with asshole, he is expressing his frustration. he needs to learn to do it in a constructive way, and american democracy needs to help him learn how to do that. some newspaper ought to afford him the opportunity to publish an oped piece of his own.

27. What this government
has done to the future is ample reason for the kid's threat. At least he didn't have access to firearms, (just sad he had to mention what would make a great target.) If he was serious, he would have prepared for the crime, no? Frankly, I find nothing wrong with threatening public officials. It's not as if they have been taking care of our interests..."Hang 'em high"!!!

Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 05:38 PM by joeunderdog
They HAVE to investigate this, and if it was a direct threat, they probably have to press charges. The rest of the factors will be considered if/how the kid is punished. What if he's a hot head? You can't just assume this kid is an apple pie liberal. We just don't know.

I work in mental health and one of our clients--legitimately nuts--spent a year in Federal Prison in the Midwest after making a threat he probably never would or could carry out. No NGRI, do not pass GO...straight to jail.

49. Oh-oh
one of things I yell at the TV when Bush is on is "I fart in your general direction." I could be in trouble.

And then, there's my 14 year old nephew. My sister-in-law just had conferences with his teachers. His social studies teacher mentioned to her that my nephew is always ready to do some Bush bashing during discussions and generally makes very good points. Fortunately, the teacher seemed amused by this.

13. says they seized his computer. I fear for this boy.

......Cloyd went to the teen's home on Monday night with agents from the FBI and secret service. He said the boy's parents consented to the search, during which a computer was seized.

"He is extremely well-versed in the history of President Bush," Cloyd said. "In talking with him, you can tell this is a hot-button topic with him."

Police said the first e-mail was also sent to the white house, Vice President Dick Cheney and the Pentagon.

Bush is scheduled to be across the Ohio River on Monday to throw out the first pitch on opening day for the Cincinnati reds.

14. In our dysfunctional society it is ok for religious leaders
and political commentators to threaten public figures but not 13 year old boys.

The Mayor said this. "I think the key thing here is you can't ignore any threat in these times." Except if those threats are issued in public by religious leaders or political commentators.

If it's so dangerous, Bush should confine himself to the White House and Crawford. If the peasants are revolting, maybe he can join CHeney in an undisclosed location. Dick is capable of protecting his Pres with his ever-ready shotgun. Or in extreme need, he could do a Taylor and bolt for safety in wxile!

So WTF did they press charges if it wasn't for the ever-present hype about
"terrorists"? Fine, investigate any threat if you have to but once even the
local police have recognised the above, why press charges??

Hey Bush! I hope you die painfully and soon. You deserve it for all the
agony, heartbreak and murder that you have committed across the planet.

Boone County Deputy Schools Superintendent Randy Poe said the boy will have a hearing before Superintendent Bryan Blavatt, who will ultimately determine whether the teen will be expelled.

Was this done from school? If not why the heck should he be expelled for something he did at home and why was he suspended? They said they took his home computer, did they take the schools as well? They said it was anonymous in a different article. Obviously not. Guess the kid doesn't know about anon re-mailers and proxy servers.
