Long-term mobile phone use raises brain tumor risk: study

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The use of mobile phones over a long period of time can raise the risk for brain tumors, a new Swedish study said on Friday, contradicting the conclusions of other researchers.

The Dutch Health Council, in an overview of research from around the world, last year found no evidence radiation from mobile phones and TV towers was harmful. A four-year British survey released in January showed no link between regular, long-term use of cell phones and the most common type of tumor.

However, researchers at the Swedish National Institute for Working Life said they looked at the mobile phone use of 905 people between the age of 20 and 80 who had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and found a link.

"A total 85 of these 905 cases were so-called high users of mobile phones, that is they began early to use mobile and, or wireless telephones and used them a lot," the study said.

"The study also shows that the rise in risk is noticeable for tumors on the side of the head where the phone was said to be used," it added.

2. I am dubious about this one
for a simple reason: the radio waves normally generated by cell phones are too long to have any effect on living cells. I thought other such studies had been done and found no correlation.

If some cell phone designs happen to generate some very short wavelengths, enough to affect cells, then it's a different story.

4. The only studies that have found NO correlation were done by Industry
Edited on Fri Mar-31-06 11:31 AM by cryingshame
there have been other studies confirming these damning results, all done by groups OUTSIDE the United States.

Science is simply part of the Industrial Complex in the USA.

Oh, in Europe cellular phone use for children is restricted because of this.

5. Cell phone wavelengths are in the centimeter range.

I have seen little research on the effect of these wavelengths on cells. And then there is the heating effect of radiation on living tissue. The very basis of the microwave oven, which as I recall is not too far removed in frequency from the cell phone.

I've long thought that operating a uhf radio with it's antenna just centimeters from brain tissue is not the sign of high intellect. Or future intelligence.

The safest way to use a cell phone is on the belt, and use a headset with it. That way the antenna is far enough from brain cells to have little effect.

Then there's the old story of the radar tech who was working on the radar antenna when someone mistakenly turned on the transmitter. He felt fine until the next morning, when he woke up dead. Cooked from the inside. Moral: Don't screw with RF, it'll bite you in the ass.

3. That didn't stop cell phone addicts from being clods 5 years ago
and I'm afraid it won't stop them now.

6. 'mobile and/or *wireless* telephones?'
So this is not just about cell phones, but also the cordless phones many of us have been using since the early 1980s? That's news to me.

8. I read recently that its very dangerous to have one of those "walking
around" phone chargers by your head at night while sleeping. We replaced ours. Its comparable to being inside a cell phone tower in terms of radiation. I always err on the side of caution in these matters.

9. When the tumor is located like this one...

It would seem to be reasonable to think that something like a cell phone held against that side of the head for hours on end might be the cause.

Johnny Cochran was a heavy cell phone user: "it isn't a rumor if there IS a brain tumor."
