Schools powerless vs. protest momentum (AZ)

School officials concede they cannot stop the momentum behind student walkouts to protest legislation on illegal immigration.

Instead, they are trying to redirect students' energies to activities in controlled school environments.

1. Do they even know the history of Chavez? He was not an illegal

immigrant AND he did not support or belive that immigrants should be her illegally. He was FOR legal immigration and FOR workers' rights, decent wages and benefits. He too believe that illegal immigration would depress the wages of the union workers he was fighting for.

3. I do believe they're demonstrating for respect

Most Latinos I've met are not very big on illegal immigration, either, but the root of the problem is good old Oppression, both back home in Mexico, and here in the USA. There is an appalling lack of respect for the Latino working class. White American anxiety misses most of that, and inadvertently helps the Bad Guys with the money and power who play these people like chess pawns.

The reason why there are demonstrations this week is the Sensenbrenner bill. It would make illegal immigration and residency a felony. That opens a big can of worms, Pandora's Box, and several pus-filled wounds. It is a sledgehammer solution to a flyswatter problem. For instance, it would arrest, then deport, the parents of literally millions of American children. Lectures about the consequences of crime are ludicrous, especially when the punishment would fall most harshly on the innocent.

We ought to use the sledgehammer where it could be used best -- on the employers who make illegal immigration attractive, and on the state and Mexican government officials who make it imperative. How Vicente Fox has managed to stay in power is a mystery to me. He bitched and moaned about the PRI (Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party -- rightist "socialists") for years, then when he took office, he out-did them in bad politics.

The idea that a person can be "an illegal" is just plain wrong. Destroy the reason for the illegal behavior, and the problem goes away. And the reasons for the illegal-alien problem in the Southwest are likely few and simple and corrupt -- and mainly rich white racists.

You probably have excellent reasons for opposing illegal immigration. But please remember, the "coyotes" are not coming here to inflict damage and then laugh at our expense. They are trying to survive in a game of political baseball -- America is Home Plate, and they -- and their children -- are the baseballs. Maybe if the politicians and "businessmen" were facing the Louisville Slugger, they'd be more diligent in solving the problem they created.

6. The student protests in Omaha, makes my blood boil

Thirty minutes away, in my school district, they are having to shut down the middle school. The kids will also have their days extended, because they are going to a 4 day school week. After school activities will also be cut; they can't afford to keep the doors open.

Nebraskans pay the 8th highest amount of taxes in the country, but get very little in return. Teachers salaries are some of the lowest in the nation. Most of the mental health facilities in Omaha have closed down, and we've surpassed 5 other states in unemployment. The state ranks below most in social services for families and children.

About 10% of Omahas population is here illegally, and one in four births in the state is attributed to undocumented people. The rapid increase of illegal immigrants, in a short period of time has strained the state.

It should be pointed out, there are communities here that would welcome an increase in population. However, it can't continue to done on the backs of the average citizen.
