House candidate faces back taxes after vote to block collections

WASHINGTON - The leading Republican candidate in an up-for-grabs U.S. House race faces a potential tax delinquency of thousands of dollars, even as a bill he voted for that would limit the state's ability to collect back taxes is poised to become law.
State Rep. Charles Blasdel, who is running for an open southern Ohio seat targeted by both national parties, seemed to be sailing toward a major victory for the GOP after Democratic Rep. Ted Strickland left the seat to run for governor and his heir-apparent, state Sen. Charlie Wilson, was forced to run as a write-in.
Now, Blasdel, who is a financial adviser with an associate's degree in accounting, is confronted with delinquent tax liens on two of his former businesses. He said he received no notice of the back taxes until The (Youngstown) Vindicator newspaper asked him about the liens two weeks ago.
Since then, Blasdel has been working with the attorney general's office to figure out exactly how much is owed. The Vindicator determined the bill could be as high as $54,000 using recorded liens for the period from 1995 to 2001 and calculating late fees.
