Ohio Sen. DeWine supports gay marriage ban

COLUMBUS, OH, United States (UPI) -- Critics who say Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, isn`t conservative enough were dealt a blow when DeWine endorsed a U.S. constitutional ban on gay marriage.

DeWine is engaged in an upcoming primary battle that has gotten tighter lately. He irked some far-right activists by endorsing a guest-worker immigration reform bill instead of a more hard-line one.

DeWine said he will co-sponsor a bill -- pushed by Senate Republican leaders and expected to be debated in June. The bill is not expected to get the 2/3 vote a constitutional amendment requires in the Senate, the Columbus Dispatch said.

DeWine upset conservatives in 2004 when he declined to support a same-sex marriage ban in Ohio, the newspaper said.
