China threatens death penalty in oil theft

Chinese police have threatened to begin imposing the death penalty in their all-out war on pipeline oil thieves, the BBC reported Saturday.

Senior police officials said production facilities had been wrecked by oil thieves in many cases. Police figures show oil theft cost the industry more than $124.6 million and led to 2,877 arrests.

Criminal punishments will be meted out, including the death penalty, Ma Weiya, vice director of the police social security management department, said.

He said most of the thieves are peasant farmers in impoverished and remote areas where the earning power is about one-third of city-dwelling counterparts
