Poll: Most Open to Letting Immigrants Stay

WASHINGTON - A slim majority of Americans are open to allowing undocumented workers to obtain some sort of temporary legal status to remain in the United States, with stronger support for the idea among Democrats, younger adults and more educated Americans, a new poll finds.


Overall, 56 percent of Americans favor offering illegal immigrants a shot at some kind of legal status; roughly two-thirds of those ages 18-34 like the idea and an equal share of those with a college education agree, the AP-Ipsos survey found.

While Democrats were more likely to support temporary worker status, with 62 percent favoring the idea, even among Republicans there was majority support, by a narrower 52 percent, according to the poll.

The AP-Ipsos survey of 1,003 adults was conducted Tuesday through Thursday, as debate swirled in Congress over a proposal that would legalize many illegal immigrants in the United States and expand guest worker programs for an estimated 400,000 immigrants each year.

1. The question I'd like to see asked is...............

......if people favor immigration for people who come here legally or if they favor immigration even for illegal aliens. Then I'd like to see the poll ask if the respondent's opinion might change if their own job was affected by an illegal alien. One last question I'd like to see asked for those favoring illegal aliens being assimilated into current society would be, "Have you ever hired someone you suspected might be an illegal alien to do any job?" The responses might be very interesting.

8. I hate the phrase "work Americans won't do" because all Americans....

....will do any kind of job if they have to live - which we all do. True, they may keep looking for a better job with higher pay and good benefits but Americans will do the work.

Since we're already dealing with 12 million illegal aliens, raising the minimum wage right now wouldn't make much sense. That 12 million illegal aliens would quickly swell to 50 million illegal aliens.:banghead: So we need to shut down BOTH borders before we raise the minimum wage.:think:

around? I see that the usual suspects are here denouncing the poll results, reality sucks, huh? It seems the general population is just not up in arms about this issue.

How about we just enforce existing labor laws, requiring employers to pay minimum wages for example and legalize guest workers? Nobody much wants to work on that solution 'cause there is no hate angle to exploit.
