Former Soviet leader warns of worsening relations

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. --Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev warned Saturday that tensions between the United States and Russia are eroding diplomatic gains made since the end of the Cold War.

"There was a kind of euphoria about the prospects of working with America," Gorbachev said through a translator, according to The Providence Journal. "These assets are being squandered. They are being withered away."

The former Communist Party chief made the remarks at a news conference before delivering a speech at the Carnegie Abbey Club.

I'd say the Russian people brought Russia down to its knees. They're the ones who signed onto the disaster that was the Soviet Union. Now look where Russia is: massive unemployment, homelessness and alcholism are back in epidemic proportions, political chaos. It's like Russia has done a time warp right back to 19th century.

The Soviet era only brought misery and death to the Russian people. Then again, misery and death have always been the hallmarks of Russian society; I don't think Russia has ever been a happy place for anyone but the aristocracies.

10. I have to disagree.

The disaster was the "liberalization" under Gorbachev and then Yeltsin. This had nothing to do with "democracy." You can't blame the old Soviet system for the current woes, in my opinion.

And Gorbachev should STFU for a change. He's the stooge who brought down the USSR, which made Russian people suffer in the last ten+ years. Millions of them died because of this political collapse. The worse man-made disaster in Russian history.
