2 Detained for Crossing Bering on Foot (walking around the world)

MOSCOW -- Russian authorities have detained an American and a British citizen in the far east after the pair made a rare crossing by foot of a frozen 56-mile stretch of the Bering Strait, officials said Tuesday.

The two were arrested in Chukotka province for failing to register with the authorities, Andrei Orlov, spokesman for the Federal Security Service's (FSB) northeastern border guard division, said on NTV television. All visitors are required to register with police within three days of their arrival in Russia, even if they have visas.

But they were stopped on their way there in the small village of Lavrenty, about 500 miles northwest of Anadyr...

I guess that would have taken a while since:

8. American, Briton Still Detained in Russia (Update)

MOSCOW -- Russian officials have not yet decided whether to release a Briton and an American who have been confined to a remote eastern village after crossing the frozen Bering Strait by foot and entering Russia without proper documents, Russian news agencies reported Wednesday.

Karl Bushby of Britain and Dimitry Kieffer of Anchorage, Alaska, arrived in Russia's Chukotka province from Alaska on Friday and failed to register with local authorities, as foreigners are required to do. It took them 15 days to walk the 56 miles from Alaska to Russian territory.

I knew the Bering gets choked with ice and that it freezes over near the shore, but I didn't know that it froze over enough to walk across!

Makes me wonder about Native American migration theories. Why do researchers claim that migration here began and ended with the last ice age when people could have just walked across any winter?
