Children are getting fatter, and so are men of all ages, government researchers have found in an analysis that weighed in on the question of the nation's growing waistlines.
But scientists from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the prevalence of obesity among women seems to have peaked.
Going into their latest research, CDC epidemiologists were armed with data from the past. Between 1980 and 2002, the prevalence of obesity doubled in U.S. adults 20 and older. The prevalence of overweight children tripled.
In her new analysis, reported Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, epidemiologist Cynthia Ogden examined weight and height measurements for 3,958 children and teens, 2 to 19, and 4,431 adults, 20 years or older.
