Germany: Israeli detained over Nazi slur
Israeli embassy in Berlin warns Israelis against using word 'Nazi' in Germany

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3236406,00.html

<snip>

"On two separate occasions recently, Israeli nationals in Germany got themselves in trouble after swearing at public officials and referring to them as Nazis, Israel's leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported Wednesday.

Reports of the incidents were received at the Israeli embassy in Berlin and prompted officials to warn Israelis against using the word "Nazi" in Germany as to avoid trouble with the law.

In one case at Frankfurt's airport, an Israeli woman engaged in an argument with a German customs official after a large quantity of cigarettes was found in her belongings. The Israeli became upset and at one point referred to customs officials as "Nazis."
The officials promptly called in the police and the Israeli was taken to a detention cell and only released after an unpleasant overnight stay.

In the second case, at the Dusseldorf airport, an Israeli woman was seeking a tax refund but was unpleased about the amount she received. According to local police, the Israeli told her boyfriend: "Look at this Nazi." In that case, too, police were called in and the woman was questioned for two hours and forced to pay a fine."

1. Weird....
I didn't know Germany's hate crimes laws precluded one from using Nazi as an insult.

4. Oh, that would get you in trouble most anywhere.
Contempt of cop is the universal crime. But I expect that Germans would take being called a Nazi even more seriously than most, for obvious reasons.

18. In Germany,
... it is against the law to insult public officials, whether they be mayors or meter maids. I think if any nationality insulted the customs officials in Germany, they'd probably get similar treatment.

5. it's true my brothere has lived in europe for 15 years when I came to see
him in 2003, I used to say "body nazi" for somebody who was overly into physical fitness. He told me in no uncertain terms *do not* ever say that in Germany.

6. France
Countries are funny that way. I remember driving from Amsterdam to Paris 15 years ago. While crossing in to France without hardly even having to stop, I commented to my English-speaking friends that not even the Wermacht got through that quickly. I did not know that the border agent understood English; needless to say, he was rather put off.

7. I live in Germany and you just can't go around calling people Nazis
you will be fined(false accusation) - and you can be sued.

When you call a person a Nazi, you've leveled a serious charge against that person...there are legal consequences here for doing so.

It's against the law to be a Nazi, so when you call them a Nazi, you're essentially accusing them of committing a crime....

Well, when you falsely accuse someone of committing a crime, there's usually legal consequences for doing so.

11. Me? I think it's accurate and funny - in a tragic funny kind of way
Under German law? That's another matter...

Considering the history, however, I can't really blame Germany for taking it as seriously as they do.

Many of the Germans I know would agree with the photo-shop...but they wouldn't laugh. They don't find Bush funny at all - they know better. They see him for what he is...

14. Thanks, saigon
A German woman that works with my husband said the other night (and I'll have to paraphrase) "in 20 years when Americans finally know the full extent of Bush's crimes, you all are going to be devastated...you think you know all, but you don't...and what you do already know won't be the worst of it"

I cried when she said that... I believe she's right.

16. HALLO, Sollykins!
:loveya: As we both know, there are LOTS of Israelis here. This bit of an Israeli calling a German a NAZI for daring to question ANY assertion is a dynamic Americans will be hard-pressed to understand.

The RW Amis and Israelis have truly morphed, denkst Du?

19. Hey Karenina!
Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm living in America's future - if she's lucky. Not sure I even want that to stay in this message. I doubt I'm making myself clear and people are prone to being hostile to what they don't understand. America's a young nation still. I used to think America took the wrong path - but now I'm not so sure she could have avoided the path she's on...it's like everything about her was heading this way for a long time..

and I cross the pond and see a nation that wasn't all that different...but it's in the future, off the path and on to another one.....but the old path is remembered and it's dangers still remind

not with guilt but with understanding -

15. That would seem to be the reason why the word Nazi
should not be used loosely. They still exist.

17. The 9% is for the state of Saxony only, not Germany as a whole
Germany has tried to ban the National Democratic Party last year, but was unsuccesfull in the constitutional court, the Verfassungsschutz, but they are under constant monitoring by this organization.

21. This would be an non-issue if not
the people fined for the offense where Israelis.

It happens now and then to germans and people visiting Germany and to avoid any misunderstanding the German Police have clearly indicated that they will enforce these rules during the World Cup this summer. The issue that prompted the press release where some Dutch fans that produced Orange (Dutch color) helmets that resembled the ones used by Germany during WW II (and now America ironically).

Idiots can be found in every country, why would Israel be any different?
