Duke University Lacrosse Coach Resigns (NYT)

DURHAM, N.C., April 5 — Duke University's president canceled the men's lacrosse team's season and accepted the resignation of its coach today, hours after Durham County authorities disclosed an e-mail message written by a team member saying he planned to invite strippers to his dorm room, kill them and cut off their skin.

The e-mail message was sent shortly after a party three weeks ago at which a woman has said she was raped by three members of the team. The message was disclosed this morning when the authorities unsealed a search warrant that was executed March 27 on the student's dormitory room and vehicle.

The e-mail message from Ryan McFadyen, 19, a sophomore from Mendham, N.J., said: "tommrow night, after tonights show, ive decided to have some strippers over to edens 2c. all are welcome.. however there will be no nudity." McFadyen continued, in harsh language, to say that he planned to kill the women "as soon as the walk in" and then proceed to cut their skin off, and added that the act would be sexually gratifying for him. It was signed "41," McFadyen's jersey number.

Robert C. Ekstrand, a Durham defense lawyer who represents McFadyen and more than 30 other Duke lacrosse players, issued a statement that said: "While the language of the e-mail is vile, the e-mail itself is perfectly consistent with the boys' unequivocal assertion that no sexual assault took place that evening. The time stamp on the delivery of the email is 1:58 a.m., shortly after the party, which is further evidence of a lack of a guilty mind."

Maybe it just meant he didn't enjoy raping someone as much as he thought it would.

6. This may be sterotyping on my part

(and it probably is), but the lacrosse players at both my high school and college were usually a) young Republican types whose first name should have been "Biff", or b) guys who were nicknamed "Mongo" or "Butthead", and could be heard screaming out of their windows, drunk, Thurs-Sat nights.

He had either completely lost control of his team or he turned a blind eye to his players' behavior or he was complicit.

10. Lacrosse Player Should be Expelled

McFadyen should be expelled for the e-mail even if he did not rape the girl. I think the words used in the e-mail are enough to get him expelled.

He had nothing to do with this incident. He's been coach at Duke for 16 seasons, why would he leave over an incident he was not involved in?

13. It's Somewhat Sad

I do think is sad that the coach had to resign. However, normally when one or more players on a team do something wrong the coach will get the ax. I think some school think this is a way to say the school is doing something about the problem and trying to change the things that allowed the event to happen. I am not really sure the coach should have been fired. Maybe the school knows things about the way this coach ran this program. Maybe this was not the first time something like this happened, but this is the first time the story got out. Think about the Air Force Academy. They knew some of their male students had raped women, never said anything, and let the men go on to have military careers. It is very possible that the same thing happened at Duke. To some degree people should push for a major investigation into the school handling of sexual assault cases.

14. I find it hard to believe that the coach was not responsible

for at least setting the tone of the team or turning a blind eye to the team members' behavior. Not that I think the coach was OK about rape, just that the general attitude of his team members should have been noticed by him. Certainly, that casual email by one team member shows a thought process that is sociopathic.

I don't know, it just seems there is this thin line between rough, contact sports that men play and a dismissive (or worse) attitude toward women. I just can't believe that in this respect the team members who are being charged with rape never revealed a disturbing view of women before. I can't believe that sickos don't reveal some of their really horrible sides that were just ignored.
