'Fatal explosion' by Bagram base
6 April 2006

One person has been killed and three others wounded in an explosion near the main US base in Afghanistan, an Afghan official said.

A police official told Reuters news agency that they were investigating the cause of explosion near the Bagram air base, north of the capital, Kabul.

The victims of the blast were all local civilians. No foreign soldier was hurt in the attack, the official said.

There has been an upsurge in violence in Afghanistan over the last year.

Some reports said that Thursday's explosion was caused by a mortar which landed close to the air base and destroyed a truck delivering food to the US army.

3. I spent many months around Bagram
From this vague news story it could easily have been a mine. Bagram Air Base is surrounded by Mtns, but they are so far away as to make a mortar strike impossible. This could have been a 122mm rocket (it has the needed range) but the fact it was a truck leads me to believe this was caused by an AT mine.

Afghanistan is littered with mines from the last 25-30 years of fighting. When you travel on any roads, there are 2 from Kabul to Bagram (the US refrained from using the highway because it was so littered with mines on and around the pavement)and the Jalalabad Road (On which the main ISAF base is stationed), you can not leave the hard track for fear of running over a mine.

So, it's incorrect to blame the * Admin for this explosion.
