Bush Defends Eavesdropping Program (Dissenter confronts Bush)

Bush Defends Eavesdropping Program

(AP) CHARLOTTE, N.C. President Bush, told by a critic he should be ashamed of his policies, defended the government’s secret eavesdropping program Thursday and said he would not apologize for listening in on the phone and e-mail conversations of Americans talking to people with suspected al-Qaida links.

A man who identified himself as Harry Taylor rose at a forum here to tell Bush that he’s never felt more ashamed of the leadership of his country. He said Bush has asserted his right to tap phone calls without a warrant, to arrest people and hold them without charges and to revoke a woman’s right to an abortion, among other things.

He was booed by the audience, but Bush interrupted and urged the audience to let Taylor finish.

“I feel like despite your rhetoric, that compassion and common sense have been left far behind during your administraiton,” Taylor said, standing in a balcony seat and looking down at Bush on stage. “And I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and grace to be ashamed of yourself.”

Bush defended the National Security Adminsitration’s survelliance program, saying he authorized the program to protect the country.

1. BOOED BY THE AUDIENCE

That guy is lucky to be alive. The audience like a pack of Lions or Hyenas was apparently ready to dismember and disembowel him in the presence of their Messiah

21. Hyenas I can accept.
since they are scavengers, even though I generally associate * followers with something like lemmings or even a lower life form, say, maggots. That may be too harsh, perhaps they are merely misguided, I like to think the best of fellow Americans, but dang, it is getting really difficult to do that after this many years!

At this stage of my life I am pretty much disillusioned by this Country in general and our so called "leadership" in particular and their penchant for killing off our kids every decade or so is making me fucking crazy!!!

40. Actually Hyenas hunt - although like all predators
they will scavenge when the need arises. They will, if hunger forces them, chase smaller predators away from their kill, and sometimes lions will chase Hyenas away from their kill. Land bound predators like Hyenas would Starve if they just waited for something to drop dead - buzzards and vultures can hang in the air riding the wind currents while they wait. It takes almost no energy once they are in the air and they can scan for miles around.

Sorry - didn't mean to make this over into wild kingdom.

50. You know, MissMillie, that was my first reaction to this post.
It's a very sad sign of the times but I wondered how anybody but a puke zombie ever got in. I don't remember any other president controlling their audience makeup in this way, do you? Did Clinton ever have 'free speech zones'? Did the DNC or any other entity ever ensure that attendees at Clinton's speeches had a mindset of devotion similar to Charles Manson's family? Anything like that at all?

51. The whole interview was a set up and rehearsed, like always.
Come you do not really believe that was on the level. I can just see bush thinking he would show us he can take criticism. Bush is cunning as well as being the reincarnation of Hitler.

Security would never let a non believer in the audience, they might assassinate the bush----.

102. I was cornered by a freeper at my daughter's school ...
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 11:18 PM by ShortnFiery
It was an afternoon while we were waiting in our cars about 10 minutes before dismissal. We were "quite friendly" with small talk about 6 months ago when we volunteered together at the school. Some of these guys/gals can come across as quite fetching if you don't broach "certain" issues.

He lumbered toward me like a man on a mission and exclaimed, "I saw you put on at Kerry (Don't blame me) sticker next to your other two military stickers on your car. I have to ask you WHY?!? Those stickers don't belong together!"

This is the first time we talked politics because I make a point to not mention it. But this guy who was so warm and friendly toward me six months ago seemed to change his whole being upon saying this. I imaged his head splitting open and a borg part peeking out. I quickly defused the issue by saying, "Well, I tend to be a liberal although it is not very popular in this area, you'll see lots of these similar stickers up north in Fairfax."

At that point he look almost sad, "Well I would have never have thought you to be one of those!" He walked away and has not spoken to me since.

The republican right wing, especially those within the religious branch, are absolutely frightening when you cross them. I'm no slouch, but these folks drink the koolaid and are fully assimilated into what I call the Religious Right of the BushBotBorg.

I agree, especially when you find yourself one-on-many, regroup to fight again another day.

This brave outspoken man, Harry Taylor, will be put through hell, the right wing will make it one of their many missions.

We love ya Harry Taylor, keep safe!

On edit: A plant? You think and our Rhandi Rhodes analyzed it? Will wonders ever cease? Well, it was "a plant" that only played to the right because all the rest of us have considered Rove-Co. allowing someone to criticize The Chimperor, a non-starter.

That act, IMO, was a trial lead balloon. Don't be looking for the same in the future ;).

19. Drip, drip, drip.
Up till now, Bush has been insulated from most Americans. President Cheney and Vice President Rove have realized that the situation is desperate. They've decided to let Store Mannequin Bush see what the country thinks of him.

It's ugly, there's no doubt about it.

And it's taking its toll on Bush. Just look at him. He looks aged, worn-out. His hair looks like a matted Brillo pad.

These "realistic" speeches are not going to help any.

26. You're so right.
I wonder what has motivated his handlers to let him get out among real Americans - and not just restricted his cheering squads?

He's made a few trips into this part of VA, but never once has been near ordinary people - attendees have been extremely carefully screened to make sure they're all big-time KoolAid drinkers (and needless to say, very generous donors to the GOP too).

That bed-hair brillo look is a real giveaway - he's been running his hands thru it too much - either that or trying to pull it out, literally!

94. Maybe: Local radio spin supports the possibility
I heard about this on a radio station as I was driving home from work, and Bush sounded pretty damned confident—even cheerful—as he responded to the guy. The news gal made it sound as if Bush was very eloquent in his defense. Can't remember the words exactly, but she said something like he addressed each of the points made by Mr. Taylor in his response.

I would love it if someone out there can assure me that I'm just being paranoid, though.

the whole description sounded fishy. A lone man man rises up in the balcony, (what a great camera shot that must have been) the people boo, the president says no everyone this is American let him speak and then does something he absolutely blows at: an extemporaneous point by point refutation of the guy.

Unless of course it wasn't extemporaneous at all.

He cannot handle personal attacks. He cannot speak extemporaneously with anything resembling intelligence. He HAD to have been given this script in advance.

One for having a "concealed weapon," the other appearerd to be wearing an Abu Ghraib black hood, for which he was arrested. According to the newscaster, "you are not allowed to conceal your identify." WTF?

un-FREAKING-believable, Bush actually listened to a critic??
Maybe his meds are starting to work??

I, too, hope that, from time to time Bush has the humility and grace to be ashamed of himself...and the way he has dragged this country down...and the way he's dragged the economy down...the way he's caused suffering for millions of Americans negatively impacted by his economic policies!

from what it was in the late 60s when I fled, screaming.

Nobody back then dared to voice an opinion that hadn't been handed to them by some sort of official on the news, in the pulpit, or from the local gummint. It just wasn't DONE.

I'm really glad to see it.

62. so much for affability and "the common touch"
It's easy to yuk it up when you're meeting people who agree with you -- but the real challenge is trying to win over someone who's opposed. This is where Bush's much-lauded charm falls apart -- he's shown repeatedly that he doesn't care and is even hostile, when ordinary Americans dare to challenge him. (A contrast with Clinton, who would plunk himself down and try to talk things over.)

69. I hate to think this but I believed this was staged by Karl Rove.
Randi played the CNN version of the exchange on her show and the minute I heard Bush say, "Wait! Let him finish!" I knew it was the work of Karl Rove. Rove did pretty well, IMO, if you look at the picture of Harry, I think they tried to get a guy that their knuckle-dragging base would look at and say, "He looks like a typical Liberal!"

Let's face it, if they stage fake newscasts what would stop them from putting in a few plants here and there that President Asshat can stand up to and defend himself? Then he can say he doesn't run away from criticism.

FYI, Randi said the tape she played was an "edited" version. Wonder if the full exchange is provided anywhere?

89. Oh, I firmly believe this too
Bush's* demeanor was way too smooth, and his response, body language, facial expressions was scripted. In fact, my impression is that Bush's* timing was a little off - he played his role a little too quickly. He didn't allow for what the man said to him to sink in - the only time I've ever watch Bush* react so quickly and with that twinkle in his eye was when speaking about war, destruction and death. Bush* does react well to criticism of any kind. It was scripted to show how open he is to dissent.

throughly investigated. Dollars to donuts he has some interesting connections to the kool-aid machine.

So, don't get too excited, these forums are too well scripted, and the monkey was too well trained. This allowed Bushie to firmly defend his illegal actions. Sweet kool-aid for the swillers such as:

....lot of explanation by monkey-boy, then: "Now, you and I have a different — of agreement on what is needed to be protected. But you said, would I apologize for that? The answer — answer is, absolutely not." (Applause.)

Harry was also too deferential to the Sociopath-n-chief for such a question, IMHO:

".....you have the humility and the grace to be ashamed of yourself inside yourself. And I also want to say I really appreciate the courtesy of allowing me to speak what I’m saying to you right now. That is part of what this country is about."

Puh-fuckin-lease!!!! Harry is choking it down just fine!! Geeesh!!

it did strike me that shrub handled himself damn well compared to other instances. I mean he spoke fairly clearly (for him) and confidently, what he said was basically lies and twisted but he held it together much more than usual...so perhaps he was 'prepared' but probably not that this man was a 'plant' so much as they knew he was there and expected his question.

Questioner sharply criticizes President Bush at appearance

By Ron Hutcheson and Jim Morrill
Knight Ridder Newspapers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - President Bush isn't used to tongue lashings, but he got a scolding Thursday from a North Carolina man who told the president that he should be ashamed of himself.

"While I listen to you talk about freedom, I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges, to try to preclude me from breathing clean air and drinking clean water," real estate broker Harry Taylor told Bush at a town hall meeting. "I have never felt more ashamed of nor more frightened by my leadership in Washington."

The audience at Central Piedmont Community College booed, but Bush seemed to take the criticism in stride. "I'm not your favorite guy," the president said. "What's your question?"

Taylor didn't have one, but he wasn't finished. "I feel like, despite your rhetoric, that compassion and common sense have been left far behind during your administration," he told Bush. "And I would hope, from time to time, that you have the humility and the grace to be ashamed of yourself."

Watch the video of the question to Bush and his CNN interview this morning. It's somewhere in this thread.

He was too nervous, too genuine. He is a real person.

I think they may have been ready and hoping for something like this, but I don't believe he a plant.

Watch that video. Bush is such a smirking asshole. He let the guy finish, but Bush's facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, etc. are totally that of a bully. He got off on the fact that this guy was nervous and uncomfortable and he was going to show what a "badass" he is by standing up to his critics.

I give this Harry Taylor guy credit. He had guts and I would have been intimidated in that crowd too. He did better than I would have.

124. My bet: pre-screened but not a plant.
My guess is that Taylor submitted a different version of his question beforehand and that when he got up to speak he actually elaborated on the question and added the more critical stuff.

That way B*sh would've known beforehand what the question was about hence his well-rehearsed answer.
