NYT: Europe Stops All Payments to Hamas-Led Palestinians

"The European Union announced today that it had halted payments to the Hamas-led Palestinian government because it had not renounced violence or recognized Israel's right to exist.

Alone and Broke, Hamas Struggles to Rule The decision increased pressure on the Palestinians' new cash-strapped government, which has already lost funding through Israel and the United States.

"We are not authorizing any payments that go to the Palestinian Authority or through the Palestinian Authority," said a spokeswoman for the E.U.'s executive branch, Emma Udwin, adding that further funding of the Palestinians would be discussed by foreign ministers of the 25-nation bloc when they meet in Luxembourg on Monday. "This doesn't prejudge any decisions they might make," she said."

1. We should cut all aid to BOTH sides until concessions are made
and verified. I'm all for that.

3. sorry, I can't agree
That sort of comment reflects "moral equivalence" thinking at its worst. The idea that Hamas and the Israeli government are equally obliged to make concessions is ludicrous. Until and unless the Knesset calls for the elimination of Palestine as a political entity and the forcible elimination or deportation of all Palestinians there is not moral comparison of Israel and Hamas worthy of serious discussion.

Israel is far from perfect but the last I heard, Palestinian Arabs who live within her borders are able to go about their business pretty much unmolested. Palestinian Arabs have and do hold seats in the Knesset. When I see a Jew serving as a member of some Palestinian government we can talk about what "both sides" need to do.
