Kerry lambastes Bush, GOP-backed immigration bill

By BETH FOUHY
AP Political Writer

A defiant Sen. John Kerry on Friday lashed out against President Bush and his team of advisers, calling them "the Katrina Administration" and "the most incompetent people I've ever seen."

The Massachusetts Democrat and 2004 presidential nominee also suggested Republicans hope to scuttle comprehensive immigration legislation pending in the U.S. Senate in order to prevent immigrants from becoming voters.

Kerry made the remarks via teleconference at a breakfast gathering of the National Action Network, an advocacy group founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, who competed against Kerry in the 2004 Democratic presidential primaries. Kerry had been expected to attend the breakfast in person but canceled because of votes on the immigration legislation in Washington.

Kerry criticized a bill passed in the U.S. House late last year that would criminalize illegal immigrants and those who offer them assistance, echoing controversial comments made last month by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who said the legislation would penalize "even Jesus himself."

"Jesus reached out to the poor, the sick, the prisoners and the lame," Kerry said. "The notion that people in the church who help people who are here illegally would somehow be criminalized would be to say they can't even walk in the footsteps of the teachings of the Scriptures."

1. Is It Me Or Has Kerry Really Come On Strong As Of Late?.....
He's been sounding very Presidential these last few weeks. So much of a pleasure to listen to and to believe than *. If *Co comes crashing down in thea near future and its uncovered that voter fraud was the only reason * won in '04 - could Kerry be put into the Presidency?

4. He did what he could (imo)....my understanding is that his lawyers are
still involved in the lawsuit which is still going foward.

Biggest problem on the fraud stuff is that there was just no legal avenue for redress of harm...the laws need to be fixed. Read the LWV lawsuit, I think maybe it tries to address this. Couldn't solve 11/2004 at the time though. :-(

8. You raised a good question.
Does anyone know if Senator Kerry's ( my President) lawyers are still involved in any legal action regarding Ohio.

15. Has he proposed legislation to fix those laws?
"Fools", said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

16. Co-sponsored with Obama for some of it.
The LWV lawsuit should also help clarify some holes in the existing law.

11. Did you go out
on the streets and stand up? Kerry is one person, it is we the people, not I. You know until we the people demand to make EVERY VOTE COUNT, nothing is going to happen.

Its so easy to play the blame game, but we the people need to take a good look in the mirror.

13. I did, in 2001, after the SC "selection"...damned few joined us.
That's one reason I don't fault Kerry for the decision he made.

5. Oh yeah. He's been coming on strong.
But I think he was also strong before. It's just taken all this time, and *'s poll numbers being in the cellar, to break the media blockade.

7. Ride that boy's ass like the nasty child he is!! Go Pres. Kerry GO!!
Heap it on, be one of the few examples of great American statesmen we have left. When you speak for the American people we all hear you..when you sit silently in the hallowed halls of congress and say nothing as to the behavior of this administration, we also hear that silence.
Speak For Us..and Thank You Senator Kerry and those who have shown the guts it takes to stand and fight for the America you love.

12. He is a great statesman, for sure.
As those of us who watch him closely know, those periodic "silences" usually turn out to be times when he's been working very very hard on something behind the scenes, and then will suddenly come out with a whole lot of stuff, as he did this week. Bank on it--John Kerry's on the job every day working for us.

14. I second this -
On each of his Iraq plans he took about 2 months after returning before presenting a plan. Each plan, though was well crafted and well thought out. At least for the one last year, he spoke of running the ideas past various people. I appreciate that when his plans are made public, they are as high quality as they are.
