San Francisco May Be World's Gayest City: Report
By REUTERS
Published: April 7, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - New statistics suggest San Francisco has the highest percentage of gay men among major cities in the world, with a quarter of them HIV-positive, a top city health official said on Friday.

"Despite an overall loss in the population in San Francisco in the last five years, we think there has been an absolute gain in gay men," William McFarland, head of HIV/AIDS statistics at San Francisco's Department of Public Health, said in an interview. "From all the data I have seen ... it's the gayest city in the world."

McFarland has compiled the city's first survey in five years on gay men and HIV to be presented at a meeting next week to discuss HIV/AIDS prevention.

He said it found an estimated 63,577 gay males aged 15 and above in San Francisco, a city with a total population of 764,000. That figure represents nearly one in five of the city's males above the age of 15.

0ne out of every four gay males -- 25.8 percent -- is infected with the HIV virus, giving San Francisco an estimated total of 16,401 HIV-positive men, said McFarland, an epidemiologist who has also worked on studies in Uganda, Zimbabwe and Egypt....

4. San Francisco is my favorite city
in the Lower 48. :loveya: I had some really happy times when I lived there between 1969 and 1974. When I went back for the first time a couple years ago, it was like coming home.

24. I was in SF then
The Capri, The Big Basket, The Stud, and many more places. That's where I first got involved in Gay Lib. I took part in many of the early gay actions. I stil think of SF as "mty" city, and we sure have the cutest mayor too! I am now in Coachella Valley, lots of Alaskans here BTW.

6. Yup. Studies prove we've got it all.
Movie star looks, fab shopping, cute guys and girls, and a place to find compassion and understanding not to mention resources if you have HIV. What's not to like? I love it here.

Now. Ahem. Can someone get me a date?

10. The HIV statistic is deeply troubling.
I'm gay. I live about 80 miles outside the bay area. I must say that the sexual culture is just no good in many segments of the SF gay community. There is much too much sex with no protection. Many have become flippant, feeling empowered by new medical therapies. It's too bad.

13. actually the hiv+ rate is dropping among gay men here.
that's not to say that some don't exercise risky behavior.

but many more of us don't.

there will always be bad news about the behavior of humans -- that's the nature of being human.

but this city is one the best to live in if you are gay!

it's fabulous.

You are welcome to visit us if you ever get to Sicily. Skittles called just as I was posting that last post. They are coming to our place for veal marsala, marinated eggplant, Bink's Massive Garlic & Cheese bread, buffalo mozzarella and Italian green beans! Mama loves to cook!

Next month Ray Peyton and I are going to Leeds and Ilkey to visit DUer tenshi816. We are planning a DU meet up. Then we are going to Glasgow. I love Europe too. I think we will be here until September 2007 then it looks like Shanghai or Singapore.

23. The Horror!
Meanwhile I watched NOW last night and learned that perfectly decent gay couples in Florida by law cannot adopt special needs, neglected and abused children with no place else to go. Once again, our conservative un-christian friends lead the charge. There must be a special place in hell for these "christians."
