Poll: Immigration, Wars Trouble Americans

Poll: Immigration, Wars Trouble Americans

By WILL LESTER Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Rising anxiety has pushed immigration close to the economy in the public's view
of the most important problems facing this country, according to an AP-Ipsos poll. Those issues
ranked slightly behind war in Iraq and elsewhere.

Immigration's rise in the latest survey about the nation's top problems suggests the public
is keeping close watch on the immigration debate in Congress and reaction around the country.

When people were asked this past week to name the top national problem that came to mind,
13 percent said immigration _ four times the number who said that in January. Roughly the
same number, 14 percent of those polled, named the economy, according to the poll of 500 adults
conducted April 3-5. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage
points.

no glasses and no official job. And I try not to even THINK about what's in the air I'm breathing.

This was about the sudden contrived drama over immigration. Immigration is not a new issue or a sudden problem; it is an attempt by the GOP to find a reasonably "safe" way to get their base distraught over the non-white people "taking their jobs" so they won't notice the hand emptying their wallets.

EDIT: Now that I look, I see why you saw this as me referring to all the issues in the poll as a smokescreen. Silly me. That's my bad for being very unclear. I'm complaining of "smokescreen" specifically about the immigration thing suddenly somehow being on par with or even more important than the causes of the job problems, the economic and wage problems.

Immigrants are not what is wrecking the economy. They are a scapegoat for what is wrecking the economy, the air, and the Middle East--big-ass corporations who give lots and lots of money to Georgie and his party pals. Employers go to jail for hiring illegal labor--or stop getting tax breaks for outsourcing, or stop getting a wink and a nod for dumping poison in the water, and a bunch of problems suddenly dry up at once. Bushie et al doesn't want that, because in order for that to go on Big Business will have to have slightly less gargantuan profits. And we can't have that. It's very useful to have Joe Schmoe blame those brown people for taking his job and blame the liberals for their persistent need for this clean air thing and this doctor-when-you-need one thing.

The point I failed to make is that they're dangling scary-sounding fake issues at us because they don't want to/intend to/aren't able to do anything about the real problems. They're too busy lining their pockets.

2. 46% Prefer Candidate Who Favors Barrier along Mexican Border
April 7, 2006--A Rasmussen Reports national opinion survey asked Americans to choose between two hypothetical candidates with differing positions on the immigration issue.

"One candidate favors building a barrier along the Mexican border and forcing illegal aliens to leave the United States. The other candidate favors expanding the ways that foreign workers can legally get jobs in the United States."

Forty-six percent (46%) of Americans said that they prefer the candidate with the harder line on illegal aliens while 38% opt for the candidate who wants to expand legal opportunities for foreign workers to find jobs.

<snip>

An earlier survey found that two-thirds of Americans believe it doesn't make sense to debate new immigration laws until we can first control our borders and enforce existing laws. That same survey found that 40% of Americans favor "forcibly" requiring all 11 million illegal immigrants to leave the United States.

4. This part makes sense...
An earlier survey found that two-thirds of Americans believe it doesn't make sense to debate new immigration laws until we can first control our borders and enforce existing laws.

It's kind of stupid to be debating what to do with the 11 million illegals that are already here, if you don't have a plan: A) to take control of the border, or B) what we're going to do with the next 11 million that come across illegally. They're not going to stop coming, not while the life they create for themselves here, is better than what they can have at home.

10. That part caught my eye too, Johnyawl
I didn't include it in my post on account of respect for the DU 4 paragraph rule. I figured someone else would pick up on it.

But my intention was simply to report what most Americans are really thinking regarding this important issue. IMHO we should take this into account as we consider tactics to win in the midterms this year. Nowadays I've always got November on my mind.

Thanks for your service in Vietnam.
