Powell: U.S. made 'serious mistakes' in Iraq
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-powell09.html

Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Saturday said the United States has made "serious mistakes" during the Iraq war that have led to the rising violence the country now faces.

Powell, in his keynote speech at the National School Board Association's annual conference in Chicago, also said the United States made visa requirements too strict for foreign students after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. But he steered clear of talking about President Bush's alleged role in leaking classified prewar intelligence on Iraq.

"We made some serious mistakes in the immediate aftermath of the fall of Baghdad," Powell told a crowd of thousands at the McCormick Place conference. "We didn't have enough troops on the ground. We didn't impose our will. And as a result, an insurgency got started, and . . . it got out of control."

Now, American troops must "stick with the people of Iraq" until order is restored, he said.

Too little and too late Judas Colin.

Hope you love those 20 pieces of silver you and your sleazy son sold out the Constitution for!

6. Yes, marmar. I'm with you again on this. That speech to the U.N. was
inexcusable and either he knew it was lies and did it anyway, which is horrible, or he was duped because he's a yes-man and a fool and did it out of incompetence.

Not much to hang our hat on there, is there?

Good point, good post.

16. 5 star militant for tyrannical corporacrats. He has no honor as a man,...
,...especially a man who was suppose to defend our people, our constitution, our laws. He was a 5-star opportunist. THAT is his medal, "OPPORTUNIST THROUGH BETRAYAL OF HIS OATH".

If he was a real man with a whole conscience, he'd apologize for betrayal and do everything in his power to re-pay his own countrymen with a commitment to taking a stand for our rights, our laws, our integrity and value.

But, he WON'T. He's too vested in the demon of personal opportunism to actually engage in something impactful for all he falsely stated he stood for.

Shame!!!

17. If he were still a man, he would stand up right now this very
second and admit to being fooled or a willing participant. Then he would come clean with everything, going back to Vietnam. Then he would run against someone as a Repuke in 2008 and shame Bush with his every breath.

That's what a real man would do.

4. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Rice, Wolfowitz made mistakes
These are the people who engineered the mistakes not some generic "U.S.". And they're still fucking up. But its just all so easy to say it, sure we made mistakes, oop's and yeah who doesn't but that don't mean we're going to do anything about it and btw, the troops are stayin'.

Tell us all something we don't know Powell.

Bush, Cheney,Rumfeld, Powell, Rice and Wolfowitz are STILL around!! Except for Powell who just sort of bowed out, the others continue their agendas and in Rice and Wolfowitz's cases....advanced! Makes sense to me! :sarcasm:

Edited on Sun Apr-09-06 03:15 PM by Malva Zebrina
:eyes:

See that is the way it goes. Colin Powell suffers not for his complicity in aiding and abetting a war, that he most assuredly knew was based on lies.

They just go on making speeches to thousands. I wonder how much he gets paid per speech.

No penalty at all except for the disdain showered upon him by those who are aware. What's that when one can still make a lot of money in spite of what he did? Has Colin opened a lobby firm yet, I wonder.

If he were an honorable man he would have refused to spew those lies at the UN and resigned. He is responsible for thousands of deaths as are the other criminals of the Bush Regime.

29. Meanwhile, the PROFITEERS BILK OFF perpetual restoration of order.
THEY TAKE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS for bloody imposition of "their" will,...their will is amoral, ever-consuming and barbarically obsessed with accumulation of power. They are few,....a network representing, perhaps, .005% of the human population, if that. The very few,...playing "god" in the most vicious, domineering, and profiteering way, simultaneously behaving as the antithesis to God, Christ, Muhammad, Buddha, et al destroying human potential with their mere presence. It's sick.

These are mere human beings who have no natural right to STEAL human potential or TAKE human life.

33. This is like the Viet Nam revision
Essentially, he is arguing that the U.S. didn't prosecute the war violently enough, much like the revisionists came to say about Viet Nam. In both cases it is incorrect, and the reasoning just leads to war crimes.

37. It's sad, really....
he used to have some credibility. He lost it all when he fell on his sword for this travesty of an administration.

I guess I believe he was duped, but it is an insult to his intelligence to think so. If the admin really duped him, I can see that it was intentional, to remove him from future political challenges. Without his shameful UN speech, he would be a viable Republican candidate. Now, he's just another Bushitter.

41. Screw you Powell,
You sold your integrity to scum and now nothing you can do or say will get that shitty taste out of your mouth. Now, American troops must "stick with the people of Iraq" until order is restored, he said. What sad pathetic bullshit, the chaos is just what the neocons want, an excuse to stay and make sure the Iraqis don't form a government that does not fit in with Americas Empire. They weren't mistakes you made before the invasion, they were huge fucking lies and you went along. I hope your conscience keeps you awake for the rest of your life.
