Motorists, Genealogists Beware: Homeland Security Law
Will Have Broad Impact

From the Caledonian-Record (St Johnsbury, VT): http://www.caledonianrecord.com/pages/local_news/story/8e971fe52

BY ROBIN SMITH, Staff Writer Monday April 10, 2006

DERBY -- Federal law says that Vermont will have to issue high-tech driver's licenses beginning May 1, 2008.

The new driver's licenses are required under the REAL-ID Act, part of the U.S. Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act approved by Congress last year. This federal law regulated by U.S. Homeland Security will have broad implications for Vermont and Vermonters.

State laws will probably have to change, and maybe even the Vermont Constitution, says Richard McCoy, public health statistics chief with the health department and the point man for upgrading records to meet coming federal rules. Vermont's position as an open records state, one of a few in the United States where anyone can easily access paper and microfilm vital records, may end, officials say.

This article is well worth reading all the way through, because it shows just ONE MORE example of how our beloved "Homeland Security" idiots are continuing to make our lives more complicated and expensive, and LESS secure. For ALL of us, not just people in Vermont and other border states.

1. DHS, TSA and the unPATRIOTic Act all need to go
in order for us to start the long road back to being something other than a police state.

2. I've never understood exactly how the Patriot Act helps stop terrorism...
...or other crimes in any way that wasn't already available to law enforcement and the intelligence community, albeit with more oversight. When the restriction of our constitutional rights are peeled away from the act, what does it really do to protect Americans? I would love to see a reasoned debate of the facts on this issue, minus the typical right wing appeals to fear and patriotism.

3. I'd like to see that too, but the Gov't will just bring in more hysteria
and fearmongering - just like always.

4. You're missing the point
Republicanism is about surface appearances. Freeper types are taught to never look below the surface. That's why they wear those fake shiny-happy smiles all the time. Hence they'll pass a law titled Something-or-other Environmental Protection Blather and it'll be about cutting down all the forests so the leaves won't get their lawns dirty. They know for damn sure their followers won't read it and their followers will do everything possible to make sure nobody else reads it.

Hence, by their thinking, the Patriot Act is a good thing because it's title is "patriotic". Game over. To actually read the thing is heresy.

5. It's Only Purpose Is To Stop Domestic Insurrection
In other words, people who oppose BushCo and its policies.

6. They miss one of the scariest items in REAL ID
... at least imho. Section 102(c) of REAL ID stipulates that the Secretary of Homeland Security and his/her designated agents, may, at his/her sole, personal discretion, waive ANY law deemed necessary for the preservation of border integrity. Think about that one, people. By that definition, if the Secretary of Homeland Security thinks it's appropriate, s/he or his/her agents could - without provocation, cause, or trial - arrest you, lock you up, torture you, hell, just haul off and shoot you on sight, they could do literally anything they wanted to do to you, and it would all be perfectly legal according to the REAL ID Act.

11. Don't change your Constitution, Vermont. Just stand up and say NO.
