U.S. Rejects Idea That Iraq Near Civil War

The Bush administration on Monday rejected assertions by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, a close Arab ally, that Iraq is descending into civil war.

"That's not our assessment," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. "We don't share that assessment."

Mubarak said in a television interview Saturday that civil war "has almost started" in Iraq and that an American troop withdrawal would only make the situation worse.

...

Asked to respond, McCormack said, "Certainly, there are great difficulties in Iraq with respect to the security situation." And yet, he said, "there is progress on the political front and on a variety of other fronts in Iraq."

1. US spreads cheeks, inserts head
in other words. Just what the HELL do they think is going on there when one sect attacks another? People are now officially fleeing the cities to live with relatives in the countryside. The cities are getting too dangerous for women and children, especially.

22. Even the Iraqi leaders have claimed that this is a civil war!
snip
The battle between Sunni and Shia Muslims for control of Baghdad has already started, say Iraqi political leaders who predict fierce street fighting will break out as each community takes over districts in which it is strongest.

"The fighting will only stop when a new balance of power has emerged," Fuad Hussein, the chief of staff of Massoud Barzani, the Kurdish leader, said. "Sunni and Shia will each take control of their own area." He said sectarian cleansing had already begun.

Many Iraqi leaders now believe that civil war is inevitable but it will be confined, at least at first, to the capital and surrounding provinces where the population is mixed. "The real battle will be the battle for Baghdad where the Shia have increasing control," said one senior official who did not want his name published. "The army will disintegrate in the first moments of the war because the soldiers are loyal to the Shia, Sunni or Kurdish communities and not to the government." He expected the Americans to stay largely on the sidelines.

10. No matter how loudly, how shrilly and how often they lie, they
cannot transform truth. The TRUTH always prevails.

In the case of Iraq, it has taken a rag-tag body of irregulars (the so-called "insurgency") to unmask the lies of these snake-oil salespeople.

As some wag on DU posted (in reference to BFEE saying earlier that there was no civil war, only "low-grade sectarian violence" happening), he had a friend who was "low-grade pregnant."

Their lies cannot re-make the truth.

11. What Will It Take?
What's it going to take for the Bush regime to admit that Iraq is embroiled in a civil war? Should the Shiites and the Sunnis start wearing blue and grey wool uniforms and shooting at each other with Springfield rifles? :banghead:

14. And at the same time, U.S. troops are back to patrolling Baghdad streets
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2218832

American soldiers have again hit the streets of dangerous neighborhoods in western Baghdad that had been handed over to Iraqi forces, trying to keep a lid on sectarian attacks that have raged since the February bombing of a Shiite shrine in Samarra.

The U.S. military has refocused its mission to confront death squads that have tortured and killed hundreds, a tacit acknowledgment that Iraqi troops have not been able to control violence between Shiites and Sunnis on their own.
