Gallup: Most Americans Critical of President in CIA Leak Case

NEW YORK A new Gallup poll released today finds that most Americans are critical of President Bush's actions in the Plame/CIA leak scandal, but only one in four is following the matter closely.

Overall, 63% of Americans believe Bush did something either illegal (21%) or unethical (42%), while 28% say he did nothing wrong. While many more Democrats are critical, 3 in 10 Republicans also find that Bush did something illegal or unethical.

The more closely people are following the issue, the more likely they are to say he did something illegal rather than merely unethical.

The poll, conducted April 7-9, 2006, shows that just 25% of Americans are following the matter "very" closely, while another 39% are following the issue "somewhat" closely. Another 36% are not following the issue closely at all.

1. So those Americans paying attention say bush's actions were ILLEGAL.
And yet even those who are NOT paying attention know he did something unethical.

It's a start.

Hate to think what it'd take to make most Americans pay attention...

4. A thick railroad tie applied to the head might get *some* folks attention>
a tiny bit more.... but even that's a big maybe for most and extremely doubtful for others.

16. I don't know that most Americans are bored to death by bushco
as much as they are "scandal fatigued". When you consider the Plame affair, the warrantless surveillance, lies about Iraq, threats against Iran and a host of other issues, it sometimes gets to the point that you can't wrap your mind around all of it.

3. 64% following it closely. 25% very closely + 39% somewhat closely = 64%
that's a lot more than "one in four".

5. What's interesting is that 1% following the matter who DON'T think he has
done anything illegal or unethical (the 64% 'following' minus the 63% illegal/unethical). Are they only pretending to know what's going on, in front of the polltaker? Or would they be able to explain why they think what Bush did was just hunky-dory? Fascinating.

6. "Another 36% are not following the issue closely at all" Notice how often
that percentage crops up; bush approval 36% - 38%. Not paying attention to this or that or the other; 36% - 38%.

bush's base; the ignorant MFers.

14. 36% polled disagree with your statement LynnTheDem
Although they do not understand why they disagree
or even what or why they were supposed to support or not support and do
so blindly and in deaf silence of the reality of the world around them.

Americans are the most politically ignorant affluent society in the world.

15. It's the number that always was - and Gallup inflated to 50-90%
in prior polls. Come to think of it, if Gallup says 28, it's probably 13% by now!

18. You notice these things ever get called what they are?
Back in 1992, 4 LAPD were on trial. It was a criminal trial and Rodney King was not a party in it yet it will forever be known as the "Rodney King Trial" -- not the "LAPD Trial."

The CIA didn't leak Plame's name. Why isn't this called the "* Leak" ?

22. or "the cover up"?
Despite my avatar, I wonder if we should be framing this as "Bush's cover-up for lying to Congress and the public in order to go to war." This would bypass the whole "is it leaking if the unitary executive does it?" question.

21. I believe Bush has managed what I thought was impossible
he's insulted his base, those still with the "W" on their vehicles.
I read today that he gave a speech yesterday and referred to declassifying the intel because he "wanted Americans to know the truth."
Well, how stupid do you have to be to buy that?
If Bush REALLY wanted "Americans to know the truth" he would have called a press conference and told us himself. He could have used the State of the Union address to "tell the truth".
But instead, he leaked info to pet journalists.
So. Just how stupid does a person have to be to believe this swill?
Bush has actually managed to insult his Faux-news watchin', Hannity worshipin', Rush listen' base.
Now, that's an achievement.

23. This is the same 25%
>shows that just 25% of Americans are following the matter "very" closely<

that will pick up the phone and call their elected representatives over different issues, etcetera.

The CIA Leak Case is pretty convoluted under the best of circumstances. I appreciate those on DU who explain (H2OMan comes to mind,) in such a way that it's easier to impart information to those who may not be as up on what's happening.

story the same amount of coverage they are currently giving the Duke rape story, closer to 90% would be paying attention.

The travesty is that this treasonous activity barely rates a mention in the world of corporate "news," and even then they bend over backwards to put a positive spin on it - all the shit about the chimp using his non-existent authority to pick and chose what he will "declassify" after the fact.

A free press would have seen to it that his ass was booted out of there long ago.
