Gas Costs Expected to Be High This Summer

WASHINGTON - Pump prices for gasoline are rising with the temperature, and motorists should expect little relief during this summer's heavy driving period, the government reported Tuesday.

The Energy Department's new seasonal outlook projects the price for regular grade gasoline this summer will average $2.62 a gallon, 25 cents higher than last summer, barring any unexpected supply disruptions.

Gasoline prices have soared since February.

Last week motorists paid on average $2.68 a gallon nationwide for regular, an 18-cent increase in two weeks and 40 cents higher than the national average a year ago.

This should be a major "strategic initiative," (Lakoff) a teaching moment for progressives to frame attacks on the larger culture of corporate greed and irresponsibility of the Republicans and their Big Oil patrons.

People are paying attention to this. It affects them. They care. We need to hammer away on this all summer and offer a coherent critique and a common sense solution. We can preempt the predictable pre-election price drop. The public is getting wise. They've seen that trick before. Does the American public want to continue to trust these Big Oil companies and place their household budgets completely at their mercy?

If we can't win on this, we can't win at all. At that point, we should consider abandoning the Democratic party because it isn't worth a damn. If we're drilling in the Arctic next year, subsidizing the costs of oil companies overhead and the Republican majority remains resilient, I seriously give up.

The explanations for high prices range from "They are switching from winter to summer grade fuel", "Investors fear conflict with Iran" to "Supplies are short".

They NEVER bring up the fact these oils companies are making record profits.

is that for DECADES, Americans have just accepted the lame excuses from oil companies about how "summer driving" season has caught them apparently unaware...and unprepared...just as winter heating season does every year..

The fact that they are in the pocket of government, allows them to continually GOUGE us all for a product that we all need..

So, the gas prices are supposed go up in the summer. Well, I think they were jacked up every season last year as well as a few seasons other than summer in past years.
