RICHMOND, Va. -- A First Amendment watchdog group has handed out its dubious 2006 Jefferson Muzzle awards to President Bush and the Justice Department.
The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression selected Bush to top the list of violators. It was based on his domestic spying program allowing wiretaps on U-S citizens.
The Justice Department was named for its demand that Google turn over thousands of Internet records.
Other winners of the 15th annual awards include the Department of Homeland Security for barring an air marshal from expressing concerns about public safety. Also listed are students at the University of Connecticut who heckled conservative columnist Ann Coulter.
