Cheers, boos as Cheney opens game

A loud mixture of cheers and boos greeted Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals baseball game.
Cheney, wearing a red Nationals warmup jacket, tossed a pitched that reached Nationals catcher Brian Schneider on one bounce.

The vice president, whose popularity is slumping along with that of President George W. Bush, walked out on the field to cheering and booing from the near-sellout crowd. The boos appeared to be little louder than the cheers at RFK Memorial Stadium.

On the field with him were three US servicemen, two of whom had been wounded in Iraq and a third who was injured in Afghanistan.

Greeted with loud boos and some cheers, Vice President Dick Cheney threw out the ceremonial first pitch Tuesday at the Washington Nationals’ home opener.

He stood directly in front of the mound and released a ball that hit the dirt in front of home plate. Nationals catcher Brian Schneider scooped it up.

Cheney wore a red-and-blue Nationals jacket that seemed bulky, perhaps filled out by a bulletproof vest. Security agents ringed the top edge of the outdoor stadium.

41. As I opened this thread and read through it, I found myself profoundly...

saddened; NOT because of Cheney, he's a slug and needs to be "booed", that is a given.

But what saddened me, was that the upper tier had to be filled with Security personnel and Dead-Eye Dick had might have felt the necessity to wear body armor.

I remember Kennedy, his Lincoln open to the air, smiling, waving. I remember Eisenhower, walking up Pennsylvania Avenue, waving and smiling at the citizens. I can remember Johnson, going into the poverty of Appalachia, sitting on a cabin step, talking to an Appalachian about how he was going to help the area with his War on Poverty. I remember Clinton pressing the crowd, right IN the thick of the people. I read about FDR saying the WH would not be camouflaged during WWII, as the people wondered in awe how the president could expose himself to danger. TR was shot during a speech, the folded speech in his pocket slowing the bullet...he kept to the speech until it was done. Lincoln, what a president, he often had people just walk into the WH, he said it was the House of the PEople, and he would not lock the doors; pretty amazing for a leader that was embroiled in a Civil War. Truman, during renovations to the WH, went outside of Blair House where he was staying, after hearing shots which were fired during a foiled assassination attempt.

Sure Kennedy and Lincoln were shot, but they NEVER sacrificed their love for people and this nation...these were brave men; far braver than the creatures that inhabit the WH now.

Have we become a nation where fear reigns supreme? Yes we have. This is why I was saddened. You see, these cowards, these deplorable disgusting creatures, are so frightened, so despised, that they have to resort to overprotection. I cannot fathom FDR, Truman, Eisenhower or Clinton going to such "extremes". Even Nixon was capable of going into places where he could be threatened without such security.

All I can say, if I was throwing out he First Ball of the season, I would be wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I'd toss the ball w/the best pitch I could summon up, and then go sit and watch the game. I would NOT show up with an entourage that rivals the Praetorian Guard. If it was my turn to die by some lunatic getting a bead on me, so be it. I would die with dignity and honor, not bring wounded GI's out with me because I need some help "looking good", but because I respect what these men have done when they were called upon. I don't agree w/this war, but I would never use a soldier for PR pruposes...:grr:
