(Sen. Ted) Stevens: Gas prices going "up and up," more exploration needed
SEATTLE -- Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, says gasoline prices are going "up and up and up" and the nation needs to expand exploration for domestic oil resources to keep pace - citing the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska as a good place to start.

Asked if gasoline prices would reach $3.50 a gallon this summer, the veteran senator said, "We've predicted the price of gas is going to go up and up and up because we're competing with the global economy now for our imports. We didn't have to do that 20 years ago. ... Almost 60 percent of our oil comes from offshore now."

Stevens spoke Tuesday with KOMO-TV during a tour of security upgrades at the Port of Seattle.

"There are many places in the United States we could explore and develop for oil - not just the arctic coastal plain," he said, referring to the wildlife refuge.

7. Yeah, Ted - domestic production peaked 36 years ago . . .
And back in 1973, we imported 28% of our oil - in 2004 it was 63%.

But all we need to do is poke more holes in Alaska for a reservoir that USGS says has a 1/20 chance of MAYBE being 60% the size of Prudhoe Bay and which wouldn't do shit in terms of long-term supply - and PRESTO - we'll have oil forever and ever and ever . . .

Yeah, whatever, Senator Asshat.

8. Alaska has to be one of the most
beautiful, majestic places on earth. Why its residents would want to be represented by this idiot who'd defile the pristine wilderness for a fast buck is beyond me.

12. Meanwhile, 80% of the North Slope oil is sold overseas.
I'm guessing Stevens never heard of logistical practicalities. This idiot would seem content to ravage every square inch of prospective oil producing land (to be sold to the highest bidder) for his perverted vision of America. Never considering the frailty of his logic.

18. How about that, Mr. Stevens?
If we kept our own oil for ourselves instead of letting the oil companies sell it where they want to for the most profit, what might that do to pump prices?

As I recall, one of the original selling points for the Alaska Pipeline was a promise that every drop that came out the southern end would be refined and sold in the United States. That was part of the bargain for handing over the Great White North to the oil companies.

But that’s probably just another “quaint” old treaty destined to be ignored when there was money to be made by the well-connected white guys.

14. no- we need to explore the record profits and demand and explanation
oil companies are sitting pretty--while we pay-
it's time to explore why.

I guess no one cares-

yeah -- let's tear up what's left of our wilderness
so these greedy bastards can make even MORE money!

15. Stevens is heavily tied to the oil companies, did you know...
that alaska is the only state in the union that gets kick backs from it's oil? That savings is passed onto the average Alaskan native. funny how that works huh?

(side note: he was the one that argued that the oil company execs didn't have to testify under oath. funny, huh?)

So as long as moron stevens continues his ass sucking oil fest he will be looked upon as a guy looking out for the good people of alaska.

But you know, it's a double edges sword. That same oil that he is wanting to explore for, is the same oil that is part of global warming and is screwing the Eskimos. The loss of the perma frost is slowly destroying the various villages in that state. Also, more and more polar bears are drowning because there are no ice flows for them to rest on. Global warming, you know.

Stevens is a fucking dinosaur of the highest magnitude. His day will pass, sadly when the people of alaska finally wake the fuck up and toss his ass and see the damage he has done, it will be way to late.

16. How about some "exploration"...
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 10:10 AM by BiggJawn
... into the accounting practices of the Big Oil companies?
"Well, if the price was too high, we wouldn't be selling as much..."

This isn't big-screen Teeee-Veeees, or I-Pods, or Harley-Davidson titty-tops we're talking about here, it's people's SURVIVAL.

It doesn't matter if it's $20 a gallon at the pump, if I need 15 gallons to do what I need to do to stay alive, I'm gonna have to pay the fucking price, aren't I?

Sons-a-bitches make it sound like buying energy, or anything that comes via truck, like food and medicine, is like deciding if you're going to Sandals or staying home with a stick of incense and a bottle of Warming Lotion this summer...

Another thinly disguised attempt to open up ANWR.

Notice he's not saying anything about Gulf Coast oil reserves?

first, along with encouraging conservation? Repugs push tax breaks for Hummer owners then bitch about gas prices. Hypocritical goons-just how stupid do they think we are?

23. boiling frog method
to prevent a frog from jumping out of the pot of water - turn up the heat slowly. the frog will acclimate to increase in temperature and not try to get out until it's too late... bye bye froggy

same method is being used with gas prices. they are being raised in dribs 'n drabs. when we scream, they drop a few pennies, then right back up again and even higher -- except this time we don't scream as loud
