Bilbray, Busby lead in 50th District balloting

NORTH COUNTY ---- Democrat Francine Busby and Republicans Brian Bilbray and Eric Roach had the early lead in the election to fill out the unexpired term of former 50th District Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham.

Busby was leading in the first returns with 42 percent of the vote.

Bilbray had 14.5 percent while Roach had 14 percent.

The 12 other GOP hopefuls were trailing with Oceanside state Sen. Bill Morrow and Howard Kaloogian each tallying about 7 percent.

Is it likely that in a run-off the Repub votes will combine to defeat Busby?

It would be a tragedy if the Repub with 14% ends up winning the seat in the end. I know its a Repub district, but what are Busby's chances in the run-off?

I am afraid pretty slim.It is a pretty Rep district, would be a great coup to capture it.

I read somewhere that we have to win this race to take the house, is that true? Anybody?

it is going to be difficult to take the house. we pretty much have to win every race we have a chance at. Hopefully this is one of many we do win!

Democrat Takes Early Lead In Special Election

SAN DIEGO -- Francine Busby, the lone Democrat in the race to replace disgraced former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, has taken an early lead in the 50th District special election.

As of 8:30 p.m., the only Democrat in the race, Busby had 42.23 percent of votes tallied, NBC 7/39 reported. Her closest Republican rival, Brian Bilbray, 14.15 percent of the vote. Republican Eric Roach followed closely behind with 13.92 percent.

Voters were scarce at a sampling of polling places in the wealthy coastal district Tuesday morning, NBC 7/39 reported. Volunteers at a polling place in San Diego's Del Mar Heights neighborhood reported only 16 people had voted by lunchtime.

"I feel completely betrayed, not just by Cunningham but by the policies of the Bush administration," said Roach voter John Towers, a 51-year-old college math instructor from Cardiff who described himself as a fiscal conservative. "I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Republicans are so disgusted they just stay home."
