US's Rice says time for 'strong steps' over Iran

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Wednesday Iran's assertion it has enriched uranium will require "strong steps" from the United Nations Security Council.

Rice said the announcement on Tuesday from Tehran that it has begun nuclear enrichment was further proof it was not adhering to requirements already set out by the international community.

"I do think the Security Council will need to take into consideration this move by Iran," Rice said at the State Department. She urged that when the council reconvened at the end of this month it should take "strong steps to make certain that we maintain the credibility of the international community."

Rice did not indicate what the steps might be but her spokesman Sean McCormack said it would be stronger than the presidential statement by the Security Council last month after weeks of wrangling at the United Nations.

5. "... maintain the credibility of the international community."
translation: "the 'international community' is ONLY 'credible' IF it bows to bushco. wishes."

what a complete and utter crock. they sure do love to speak for others. i rather doubt the security council is gonna play anymore of bushco.'s games though.

12. OK draft dodgers, all together now...
Sing with me!!

Sarge, I'm only eighteen, I got a ruptured spleen
And I always carry a purse
I got eyes like a bat, my feet are flat,
and my asthma's getting worse
O think of my career, my sweetheart dear,
and my poor old invalid aunt
Besides, I ain't no fool, I'm a goin' to school,
and I'm working in a defense plant.

I've got a dislocated disc and a racked up back
I'm allergic to flowers and bugs
And when the bombshell hits, I get epileptic fits
And I'm addicted to a thousand drugs
I got the weakness woes, and I can't touch my toes
I can hardly reach my knees
And if the enemy came close to me
I'd probably start to sneeze

I hate (Rafsanjani), and I hope he dies,
but one thing you gotta see
That someone's gotta go over there
and that someone isn't me
So I wish you well, Sarge, give 'em Hell
Yeah, Kill me a thousand or so
And if you ever get a war without blood and gore
Well I'll be the first to go

We miss you Phil!

"strong steps to make certain that we maintain the credibility of the international community." Good one, Condi.

With us or against us. Coalition of the willingly bribed, etc.

She was head of national security on Sept. 11th, and we all know how well that worked out. Why would anyone think she can keep us safe now?

17. So, the SC has passed a presidential statement, whatever that is
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 11:46 AM by daleo
"Rice did not indicate what the steps might be but her spokesman Sean McCormack said it would be stronger than the presidential statement by the Security Council last month after weeks of wrangling at the United Nations.

Asked about the possibility of sanctions on Iran, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said: "That's a possibility as well, that's one option that's available." Russia and China, key players on the Iran issue with veto rights, strongly oppose sanctions. (Additional reporting by Matt Spetalnick)"

Has Iran actually broken any treaties or threatened anybody? I just can't see what the legal basis for "further steps" would be (not that Rice cares about a legal basis - this part is all for show).

18. Security Council will consider 'strong steps' against Iran
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, announcing yesterday that his country had crossed the line into enrichment, said Iran's objectives were peaceful.

Iran is said by many analysts to lack the equipment, including a nuclear reactor, to make nuclear weapons.

But Rice brushed aside suggestions Iran was far from the goal the United States and its allies suspect - nuclear weaponry.

She said the world believes Iran has the capacity and the technology that lead to nuclear weapons.

19. On what basis of international law can the Security Council take action?
Assuming (entirely without basis, I know) that the US controlled Security Council still gives a snake's fart about international law.

Never heard of them. Really, Mr.Clarke, the way you talk about them, you'd think these phantom Islamic terrorists of yours were about to blow up New York City and Washington, D.C.
