Schwarzenegger comes out vs. preschool tax
JULIET WILLIAMS
Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is opposing a June ballot initiative promoted by film director Rob Reiner that would raise income taxes for the rich to pay for universal preschool.

"Put simply, the governor does not support tax increases and is opposed to Proposition 82 because it will raise taxes," his communications director, Katie Levinson, said Wednesday.

Until now, Schwarzenegger has avoided definitive statements on the initiative, which is similar to a measure he spearheaded in 2002 for after-school programs.
Proposition 82 - the so-called Preschool for All Initiative - would raise income taxes by 1.7 percent for individuals who earn at least $400,000 a year, or couples earning at least $800,000.

It would raise an estimated $2.4 billion a year to pay for what supporters call high-quality preschool.

3. Why would the rich want to pay?
By providing greater access to education, they would be facilitating the development of a better-informed electorate. There's nothing our masters fear more than drones that think.

7. The Kindergarten Cop is short-sighted: the money goes to kids.
He can only see money being forcibly extracted from his base. The public policy behind taxes is that the funds go to the common wealth of the people. At least here, it isn't going to special interests like commercial farmers or to lobbyists' representatives. And with the exception of Neil Bush, nobody ever got rich going into education.

8. Arnold hates children.
Isn't Arnold rich? Shouldn't he recuse himself from this issue?
