Eight States Apply to Vote Early in 2008
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - At least eight states applied Friday to join Iowa and New Hampshire in voting early in the 2008 Democratic presidential contest.

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada and South Carolina had put in a bid by Friday afternoon. Democratic National Committee spokesman Damien LaVera said he wasn't sure how many more states might apply.

The DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee agreed last month to let several other states more racially diverse than Iowa and New Hampshire choose their presidential favorites early.

Under a process that still must be approved by the Rules Committee and the full national committee, one or two states would be allowed to hold caucuses between Iowa and New Hampshire, while another one or two would hold primaries shortly after New Hampshire. In 2004, both Iowa and New Hampshire votes were in January. The rest of the states would hold their primaries and caucuses beginning in early February.

Next Thursday, representatives of some other states will be in New Orleans for the DNC's spring meeting to tell the committee why their states should be early ones.

2. look at this:Rules for the Democratic presidential nominating calendar
ASSOCIATED PRESS

A look at how the 2008 Democratic presidential nominating calendar will work:

-Iowa will hold the first caucus on a Tuesday, probably in January, as usual.

-One or two states will hold caucuses on the Saturday after the Iowa caucus.

-New Hampshire will hold its primary, the nation's first, on the Tuesday after Iowa's caucuses.

3. After the 50 State Project, this will probably be the biggest decision
the DNC makes this election cycle. Primaries are media magnets (duh) and money magnets (duh).

Personally, I cling to my naive wish for a three tiered primary "season".

Small population states first.
Middle population states next.
The big guns last.

While I realize media and popular support is effected by *any* primary, technically, small states first would give their state parties a voice and leave the final delegate count in play, nationally.

5. god forbid the big Dem states get a voice
it is all over when we get a chance to decide. Regional, rotating primaries is the key
