Mollohan (D-WV) (smear) report linked to conservatives (Scaife)
http://www.wvgazette.com/webtools/print/News/2006041326

A Pittsburgh-area family that frequently funds conservative organizations has mostly funded a group accusing a West Virginia congressman of creating a nonprofit group for his own political gain.

The National Legal and Policy Center, founded in 1991 and based in Falls Church, Va., has received millions since 1995 from three Scaife family foundations, according to Media Transparency, a Web site that researches conservative organizations.

The center turned over to the Justice Department a more than 500-page report on Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va., and his relationship with the Vandalia Heritage Foundation. The center has refused to release the report publicly, saying some items it contains may not be accurate.

The center’s report has been the fodder for national news stories in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, along with calls for Mollohan to step down from the House of Representatives ethics committee.

<snip>

Between 1995 and 2005, the center received more than $1.43 million in foundation grants, including $1.18 million from three Scaife-family foundations, including the Carthage Foundation, Sarah Scaife Foundation and Scaife Family Foundation, according to Media Transparency.

the repuke culture of corruption had to bubble up because of the volume -- these however border, if not cross, manufactured.

2. Scaife is one of the funders of the takeover
CNP afficionados know about the role his foundations play in funding just about every wacko reich-wing think tank and smear group. This has been going on for decades.

Scaife is a very dangerous character.

4. Total hypocrites
I posted a couple days ago that I got a robo-call from the National Republican Committee pushing this and telling me I should call my congresswoman to ask for Mollohan's resignation from the ethics committee. There are no repukes in our household (unless one of the cats is) so it looks like they are calling everybody in my swing district (ill-8) and trying to use this to slander all dems or at least deflect from their culture of corruption. I was surprised at the audacity and hypocricy of the ethics challenged bastards trying to turn the tables. The house ethics committe has been turned into a farce by these creeps. Not a peep from it concerning DeLay or Cunningham or the ohio mess etc. etc. etc. Now they've found some swiftboat charge by a scaife front. Despicable.

5. Of course the Washington Post echoes the calls.
Since the firing of Colman McCarthy and the deaths of Mary McGrory and Herblock, I sometimes think The Washington Post has given itself over to carrying the water of the Republican Party. Today's (Saturday) op-ed page includes a call for Mollohan to step down until he is cleared. That sounds sane, but this latest wrinkle in the story has me thinking the op-ed is more knee-jerk trashing of Dems and sucking up to the GOP.

6. So very fair, the Post is
Mollohan should step down "until he is cleared." But the likes of Bob Ney, Tom DeLay, Bill Frist, Dick Cheney, and probably about four dozen other Republicans I could tick off are all allowed to remain in their positions, no matter how much damning evidence of their absolute corruption comes out.

Yeah, that sounds fair.

11. Scaife and his wife are in the middle of a nasty divorce!
Maybe she will write a tell-all book. He thinks everyone is evil like he is, as this article shows. He really thinks it's human nature to gloat over other people's misfortune! He and his co-conspirators should all have been arrested and tried for treason, imo. It IS treason to try to bring down President.

Billionaire and his wife in dogfight?

He's in a trauma. He was almost choked to death when she was grasping the leash," the 73-year-old Scaife, who almost never gives interviews, complained to Lowdown's Nicole Pesce yesterday. "She claims that the dog belonged to her because the dog is in her name on the registration papers. But she gave the dog to me nine years ago. So he's my dog."

But the pooch, a golden Lab named Beauregard, seems the least of Scaife's troubles. At stake in what is shaping up as one of the nastiest divorces in American history is a fortune estimated at $1.2 billion.

....

As for Clinton supporters, Democrats, liberals and other Scaife-haters who'll delight in his misery, Scaife said, "Let them gloat! That's human nature."

He'll probably try to settle with her and make her promise not to write a book.
