US investors turn their backs on Republicans, Pres Bush - poll

NEW YORK, April 15 (Itar-Tass) -- U.S. investors, traditional supporters of the Republican Party, seem to be ever more critical of the current Administration and President George W. Bush in person.

The “investor exodus” phenomenon may have dire effects in the forthcoming congressional elections in November and eventually lead to the Republicans’ loss in the struggle for control of the Congress, as follows from a Zogby International opinion poll.

According to the poll results Business Week published on Friday a mere 43 percent of the polled investors approve of George W. Bush’s policies. Business Week recalls that in the 2004 presidential election Bush had the backing of 61 percent of investors.

The investor class is a major driving force in U.S. politics. It encompasses virtually all walks of life, because everybody who invests one’ s earnings into securities regards oneself as an investor.

10. FYI, proper idiom is "toe the line", not "tow the line"

The expression "toe the line", meaning to conform to the rules, often appears as "tow the line". It's often said that it comes from an ancient practice in the House of Commons, the lower house of the British parliament. A pair of lines is painted on the floor that separates the two front benches, replicating one in ealier chambers (the Commons is strong on tradition).

The rule used to be that during debates members could step no nearer to the opposing benches than the line on their side of the floor. This dates from a period when members hapbitually wore swords and the rule was designed to deter them from getting into potentially fatal confrontations. The lines are traditionally two sword lengths apart. So much is historical fact. But it is also said that if debate was getting too heated, the Speaker would demand that members "toe the line". Toe the line is actually the survivor of a set of phrases which were common in the 19th century; others were toe the mark, toe the scratch, toe the crack or toe the trig. The earliest recorded form is dated 1813, in a book by Hector Bull-Us (a pseudonym, you will not be surprised to hear) with the title "The Diverting History of John Bull and Brother Jonathan". This already had the modern figurative sense of conforming to the usual standards or rules: "He began to think it was high time to toe the mark". Many early examples are from the British navy, which is where it may have originated.

Toe the crack is an American form of the 1820s in referrence to a crack in the floorboards that delineates a straight line. Toe the scratch is from prize fighting, where scratch was a line drawn across the ring (often in the earth of an informal outdoor ring)to which the fighters were brought ready for contest - it's a close relative of "to come up to scratch". In toe the trig, trig is an old term for a boundary or center line in various sports.

Since I retired from working for the govt., I no longer have daily contact with a lot of other people who know the score when it comes to the dark underside of politics in the GOP. DU has been a lifeline for me. We always jump to make fun of freepers' grammar, spelling, syntax, etc., but a lot of our members seem to spell phoenetically - which in itself is a reflection on the dumbing down of the American educational system. Sometimes the teacher in me just has to comment. I still rely on the Oxford English Dictionary, because I think careless writing/spelling lessens the impact of a message.

9. True story. Being just a millionaire is not enough

to benefit from the robber baron regime. You have to be one of the uber-rich - the have-mores - to get any of the take. And they are raking in billions.

The average stock holder sees a stagnant stock market and has not benefitted at all under the Bush cabal. In the end, they will be hurt more than anyone. But many investors have delusions that they are part of the upper crust, and therefore must vote republican. You don't have to be smart to be rich. GW Bush is living proof of that.
