NYC Cat Finally Free

NEW YORK, April 15, 2006

(CBS/AP) Molly the cat is finally free.

After two weeks stuck behind a brick wall in a 19th century building, the bashful 11-month-old feline was rescued from her plight Friday night by a volunteer who found her wedged in a crawl space between bricks and a piece of sheet metal. At the end of the ordeal, the black cat emerged from the building lying in a metal cage. The look on her face that said, "What's all the fuss about?"

As a crowd of reporters and onlookers jostled for a glance, the 11-month-old black cat appeared docile and unscathed despite her ordeal, which came to a happy end on Friday after a volunteer pulled her to safety from a crawl space.

"I think you'll all agree that she is in great shape," said a proud Peter Myers, a delicatessen owner in the building who kept Molly in his store to catch mice.

After blanketing the Flushing area with searchers and posters several weeks ago when the dog was holed up in a cemetery, the owners have decided to lay off and let the dog get comfortable, hoping it will approach someone, preferably in a yard where a gate can be closed or whatever. Within the last couple days the dog ate a sandwich from a guy who was fishing in a park. Vivi is a very difficult dog to catch and can run 35 mph. She's been on the lam for 8 weeks now.

and keswick's is hardly a "delicatessen" (not that there's anything wrong with that). molly seemed very nonchalent in spite of spending 2 weeks in a wall without food.are cats amazing or what.

I am so glad the cat got out... but the poor owner must be really distressed that now his customers know he has mice AND a cat running around the place! ACK!

Or is this place really just a convenience store kind of a place?

he kept the cat to make sure the store was mouse free. Beisdes, if you're in NYC, mice are the least of your problems. While Chicago can lay claim to some of the biggest roach populations, NYC can claim to have some of the biggest rat populations. Mice are minor in comparison. And if you're city born and bred, it doesn't amount to a whole helluva big deal in comparison.

And as far as the cat is concerned, most cat lovers love to frequent places that have a working cat. They're among the most loving animals around because they're well socialized.

Happy that guy (girl) got out of there OK... just worried the health dept would come down on the guy and make him get rid of the cat!

I have three fat guys at home currently (that used to be ferals)and we had a so called *stray* cat at our business for 6 months, years ago...I loved him, his name was Elvis and he appeared to be a Maine coon cat.

Unfortunately he was so attractive and so popular that someone stold him!

I was just bumming out thinking the owner would get nailed by the health dept after all is said and done for having a cat in a deli.

21. It's really common in NYC to have cats in a food place.

I used to work at a health food store where we'd always have a dog in the office. The manager would bring her westie with her. Sometimes, we'd have five dogs in the office if the manager brought hers in, the owner brought her two in and the stockboy would bring in his two. Customers knew about them, but no one cared. Eventually, we did get caught by the health inspector. She came in and we couldn't sneak the dog out in time.

It was sad, because the dog did have seperation anxiety and that's why he came to work. Stupidly enough, the law in NJ is apparently you can have the dog anywhere in the place (even the kitchen) after closing hours but the dog couldn't be in the office (on a seperate floor) during buisiness hours.
