Another two US generals have weighed into the row over whether Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld should quit.

Ex-Nato commander Gen Wesley Clark, who ran for the Democrat presidential nomination in 2004, backed calls for Mr Rumsfeld to resign.

Gen Clark said in a television interview: "I believe secretary Rumsfeld hasn't done an adequate job. He should go."

Gen Clark said the secretary had lost the confidence of some officers in the military who were asking for "somebody in the military chain of command who will listen".

I remember once reading of a similar situation with LBJ an J Edgar. When pushed to the limit, LBJ appointed Hoover director for life. The greater the push, the harder for Bush to dump him and not look like a lame duck.

Years ago. Rummy is making this politically untenable for the feeble bush junior. Let's see if the new Chief of Staff is up to the job(:rofl:) and collects & accepts Rummy's letter of resignation to signal the selected Commander in Chief is paying attention. When * publicly loses the military he is setting a new presidential historical low point.

10. I remember something different.

Clark is very kind to Rumsfeld in his second book, and I vaguely remember that the last time the idea of firing Rumsfeld was getting media attention, Clark said the problem isn't Rumsfeld but Bush. He also said that it would be patriotic (or something like that) if Rumsfeld chose to resign, which is an ambiguous comment (and is actually kind of flattering of Rumsfeld). What Clark didn't say last time was that Bush should fire Rumsfeld. I think Clark worked with Rumsfeld in a previous administration and they have some sort of relationship, but I might be misremembering that.

I've read Clark's books, and anything that came across as even mildly flattering of Rumsfeld would have earned Mr Clark my IMMEDIATE disdain...and so far he is still looking like the people's champion I've known him to be.
