Pope calls for nuclear diplomacy in Easter message
Pope calls for nuclear diplomacy in Easter message

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, in his first Easter message, called on Sunday for an "honorable solution" to the nuclear standoff with Iran, a truly independent Palestinian state, and global cooperation to combat terrorism.

The German Pope, speaking on his 79th birthday, made his appeal for world peace in his Easter "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message to some 100,000 people as he concluded the first Easter season of his pontificate.

The Pope, who marks the first anniversary of his election on Wednesday, led a joyful Easter mass in a sunny St Peter's Square on the most important day of the Christian liturgical calendar, when the faithful celebrate Christ's resurrection from the dead.

In the speech, televised to millions of viewers in more than 65 countries at the end of Easter Sunday mass in the square, the head of the Roman Catholic Church listed his worries about a world he said was living through "uncertainty and anxiety" and oppressed by widespread suffering.

1. Ah heck. What a party pooper that new Pope is. And here we were

all hoping for some major nuclear action for the holiday weekend.

_ _ _

So as not to get Don Rumsfeld's hopes up, yes, I'm kidding. I think it's a fine thing to have one of the world's spiritual leaders spank the president and the Pentagon, in public, on Easter morning, about their disastrous war plans for the Middle East. I got no problem with that at all.

3. the old bystander
the last pope could have screwed bush's 'war' on iraq simply by visiting the place on the eve of it-they'd have killed him, sure, but the old goat was nearly fini anyway.....the 'church' either is a player, or it isn't, and it can't be both...bush has succeeded in part thanks to the 'church' acting the same way it did when hitler succeeded (though it meanwhile had no trouble damning the workers revolution in russia)

6. Let's see. I support the Pope's call against nuclear politics, no matter
who the cmbatants may be.

I do not support Rumsfeld in recent days, or in any other days for that matter.

And the notion of an assault against Iran, widely held to be in the planning, is appalling.

To the extent the Pope has assisted those of us who oppose violent resolution to conflicts, I am grateful.

I'll take peace wherever I can find it.
