Iran says US in no position to attack
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060416/wl_mideast_afp/irannuclearpoliticsus_060416104743

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran appears convinced it can deter or even win a military confrontation with the United States, with the Islamic regime buoyed by high oil prices, support from militants across the region and American woes in Iraq.

The regime gave fresh signals on Sunday that it was in no mood for a compromise over its disputed nuclear programme, with officials openly flouting a UN Security Council demand for a freeze in uranium enrichment by April 28.

"We are trying to find a diplomatic solution for our (nuclear) problem, and the United States should be aware that it is not in a position to create another crisis in the region," Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told the official news agency IRNA.

"More than three years have passed since the United States invaded Iraq and after all these years they are now asking for help," he said, referring to Washington's request for talks with Tehran on the insurgency.

13. Iran will 'attack' itself, it seems, and trigger whatever they want !

The US should just end its oil dependency Cold Turkey (as opposed to long 'cold war'). The shockwaves of the US, which consumes 25% of the world's oil, should reinforce a conservation ethic worldwide.

Real leadership.

27. A recent posting here at DU that got like a gazillion votes for greatest
showed anything above ground in Iran would be a conventional weapons target. Anything below ground would have its access conventionally targetted. No nuclear weapons required. Even Israel could do it. In a waiting game or a bluffing game, the mullahs appear to simply be biding their time in power. Hey, that's exactly what lame duck Bush is doing too.

In any crisis mode atmosphere, Iran loses. At least in the bluffing game it can appear to be what it really isn't: rational. Sadly, the Bush administration's tactics in Iraq have taken all the bluff-ability away from the US military tacticians...or have they ? Is there something DARPA has up its lenghty sleeves that the Iranians aren't aware of ?

I mean it's not that we CAN'T attack, but it won't work out well if we do, and anyone that is not hallucinating from drinking the PNAC-laced KoolAid can see that.

5. maybe he's right.
what the hell kind of 'super-power' are we that we cant even take Iraq? Please. Our miserable failure there isnt exactly a show of military strength. Rather a shining example of our leaders ineptitude which most likely contributed to this line of thinking.

7. When one is reduced to attack to get what they want....
...they have already failed. These idiots are so busy profiting from their war, they don't consider the precipitous decline in American power that accompanies their profiteering and amateur "power politics."

Soft power that comes from commercial power based upon manufacturing prowess is real. It can readily be turned to use on the world scene. Naked threats and belligerence are a form of desperation emitted by elites afraid of their international competition.

"Born To Be Wild", The mullahs favorite US rock band, apparently.

With the Strait of Hormuz blocked up, and oil gone for the entire world, the US and Israel will probably do something like the scorned lover who won't let another man have his former girl, (oil that is).

If the West can't have it, nobody else will either. Suicide, truly will be blocking those straits, unless you don't really need the oil.

something that will be replayed on DoD screens as 'Scary Story 5' or something like that. Ground attack without air cover by Iranians en masse ? Now THAT's a suicide mission.

Guided Weaponry
http://www.danshistory.com/gps.shtml

The best solution is to simply GIVE the Iranians what they want. US withdrawal/redeployment to Kuwait etc and an open road to Saudi Arabia or a part of the current civil war in Iraq. Let the Islamic world reeeeeely farkel it up worse that the West ever could.

Without the West, US and Britain mainly, to kick around anymore, the Islamists will have to produce (just like the West isn't able to now) results for the people of the region. In the long run, the people of the region will end up turning on those non-producers.

Murtha et al are correct. The strategic Straits are the only real military objective. Geopolitically, people are pragmatists at heart, just like the American people.

collapses and the US cannot afford to buy anything. The entire world is holding our throat very tightly with $3 trillion worth of debt held by foreigners. I just don't get it. Why is the rest of the world letter this imbecile do what he's doing?

14. Pssst. They want to be repaid.
They've invested money in the US. Do you think they're going to cut their noses off to spite their faces ? The wealthy overseas and the wealthy at home own that debt; the rich get richer. The way of the world.

A slow devaluation of the dollar is a good thing. Markets abhor sudden jerks, although that is where fortunes are made and lost in an instant.

25. Love that one, FLPat ! Possession is 9/11ths of the law, as they say.
A Japanese investor at one time owned a whole subdivision in Santa Rosa CA and started jacking up rents like crazy...the subdivision was poorly constructed. When a class action lawsuit was eventually filed, most of the renters were then evicted. After the suit, which the renters won, they were repaid at current (high) market value.

In this scenario coming up, it looks like the foreign investors (and wealthiest US investors) will forclose on worthless assets.

What's that about it being harder for a camel to go thru the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven ?

America and Iran have got to be two of the most-hated countries in the world, now. Two fundamentalist warmongering terrorist funding nations going head to head means everyone else can breathe a little easier.

16. I think the president of Iran is simply saying:
"Bring it on Bush." Probably not a good idea diplomatically, but I think it's nice
for the leader of a country (any country) to give Bush the finger anyway, imo.

As soon as the US voters realizes that a Iran attack means higher gas prices they would hate it. I always thought that the Raygun Shield game was a make work scheme, but it might be the best of the bad choices that we have.

Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 05:52 PM by fedsron2us
why historically the US always backed a Sunni strongman as ruler in Baghdad. I bet they are regretting 'Dumbkopf' and company's decision to disband Saddam's army after the invasion of Iraq. It will probably go on record as one of the most stupid things a US administration has ever done in the area of foreign policy.

22. Oh yes, that genius L. Paul Bremer.
Things are sure quiet with him lately, aren't they?

In many ways, this war has been amazing. You could never have predicted they would go the way they did.

Here, Iraq under Saddam was a secular country; one of the most modern countries in the muslim world. Of course, they had 10 years of sanctions which crippled them, but they got by pretty well.

So after we come marching in, we disband the Ba'ath party, create general chaos and looting. End result: Iraq is now more of a theocracy than before, closely allied with Bush's Enemy #1: Iran.

23. Iraq under Saddam was
the only buffer between Iran and the rest of the world.

L. Paul and Company did a really fine job of making sure THAT ended.

We'll end up with two major theocracies: Iran and Iraq. All because of the Fuckface Squatter In The Oval Office.

30. Here's someone calling Bush on his trash talking
which will spur Bush on even more to try to prove his manliness by attacking Iraq by election day 2006.
This gamble will then cause the Dems (as usual) to acquiesce (this Iran Prez knows it) to the attack, and Bush will get his way, thus continuing the bleeding of resources and militarization and speeding the decline of the country in every way, because we will LOSE this as we have lost Iraq all for as someone else here said, AIPAC.

31. this is just BS
if Iran is such a threat, why is Israel not taking their (Iran) propaganda seriously, maybe it's because Iran does not have the intentions of doing anything to Israel, and Israel is the only country in that region who does have warheads.
