Falwell Says He Won't Back Giuliani ("supports abortion, gays, guns")
Sun Apr 16, 3:13 PM ET

WASHINGTON - The Rev. Jerry Falwell doesn't see any Democrat making inroads with evangelical Christian voters in the next presidential election. Potential Republican candidate Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York city mayor, won't be scoring any points with Falwell, either.

"Everybody admires him. And I'll never forget the great things he did on 9/11 and following," Falwell said.

"But, of course, we have, as conservative Christians who take the Bible seriously, we have probably irreconcilable differences on life and family and that kind of thing," Falwell said Sunday on "Late Edition" on CNN.

"I'll never speak an ill word about him because he means so much to America. But, yes, you're right. I couldn't support him for president," he said. Giuliani supports abortion rights, gay rights and gun control.

1. Guiliani is such a mixed bag
His leadership style is similar to Bush's in that those who oppose him are "enemies" whom he attacks. He is no fan of the first amendment, having tried to withhold funding for a museum that displayed religious art that he found to be offensive. On the flip side, he does have a more mainstream/liberal view on social issues. He's got a lot of his own personal baggage that, once it is revealed to the rest of the country, will take him out of contention for president anyway. The fundies will take the "credit" for the demise of his presidential ambitions, but that is only a small aspect of what will bring this guy down to earth.

2. I hope the Repukes rip themselves apart trying to pick '08
candidate. I want to see the fundies exposed as our own freaky Taliban. I'd love to see them sit out the election in a snit fit.

5. rip themselves apart
They may rip themselves apart while picking but once the nominee is crowned they will get in line and proclaim him to be the second coming of Lincoln. It does not matter who it is, the Republicans will suck up their differences.

he behaved like a human being.

It was a big change. It didn't last long.

6. "never speak an ill word about him"
So he rips his guts out by trashing his presidential ambitions. What a hypocrite. Rudy just doesn't have the money power to woo the Golden Spoon evangelists and is not part of the inner circle he is crawling on his hands and knees to please.

What a shame.

I'll move to Canada if that asshole adulterer is ever elected president. I swear it.

Fortunately, I don't think he has much of a chance. But if a opportunistic piece of scum like Giuliani were to ever lead the nation's highest office, I will have lost all faith in the American people and of a decent person ever leading this country again.

16. He's an adulterer?
...I wasn't aware of this part of his history. Not that it matters to me, just interesting particularly if he was one of the many that trashed Clinton for the same.

19. Not only that he wanted to bring his girlfriend
into the governor's mansion where his kids and wife were living. He announced to reporters that he was getting a divorce before telling his wife.

11. Falwell is now brazen enough to call himself the head of the GOP
The religious theocrats have taken over the GOP. I was most sickened by McCain grovelling at the robes of these freaks.

13. "Everybody admires him."
Pardon me? I'm not an admirer whatsoever, but I hope like hell Rudy runs, and raises (and spends) tons of campaign money. Rudy's totally un-electable given the current state of the Republican party.

Everyone at DU should send Giuliani an email encouraging him to run. Hell, send him 2 bucks. Giuliani's campaign stance on social issues will seem relatively sane, and when the GOP torpedos his candidacy, it will spell out for the moderates, Libertarians and independants, just exactly what the Republican party currently DOES believe in, on social issues.

22. No. Guiliani is electable as President, and the GOP wants him
The national GOP would definitely not torpedo a Giuliani campaign; they would throw their support completely behind it.

From all indications, the major financial backers of the GOP are tired of their party's fortunes being decided by Religious Right concerns. A socially moderate, "tough guy" conservative like Giuliani is exactly the kind of person person they identify with and want to run for President.
