Iraq's hospital murders

'I made a mixture of drugs and injected them. They were dead in three hours'

Doctor provided first aid for insurgents - and went on to kill police and soldiers brought in for treatment

The Guardian

<snip>

Al-Jumhuriya hospital - Kirkuk's largest and busiest - was quiet. At 10.30pm, a doctor moved along the corridor on the second floor and entered the recovery room. He leaned across the bed and turned off the oxygen supply. Half an hour later, Lt Arjuman was dead.

The deputy commander of the city's Miqdad police station was the first of 43 victims of the doctor whom Kirkuk residents are calling Doctor Death. Over a six-month period, beginning in October, Dr Louay Omar Mohammed al-Taei, moved among the puddles of blood and crowds of wellwishers in al-Jumhuriya's hectic emergency unit, quietly dispatching police officers, soldiers and officials who had been wounded, some only lightly, by insurgent attacks.

There was no apparent reason to suspect him. The enthusiastic 26-year-old, who had graduated from Mosul University in 2003, was always on hand when there was a major incident, an explosive attack or a gun battle, that resulted in mass casualties. Though Kirkuk has been relatively quiet since the US invasion in 2003, the past year has seen a surge in violence across the province. Police say more than 1,500 people have been killed or injured. The medics at al-Jumhuriya were glad of any help.

...

The Guardian has obtained the film made by Kirkuk security officials of Dr Louay's "confession". It has also seen medical records that appear to tally with Dr Louay's claims. Wearing a grey polo-neck and seated on a sofa, the doctor speaks calmly and confidently into the camera. He looks to be in good physical condition, saying at one point that he has been treated well by his interrogators. His detailed recall of names, dates and places does not appear to be forced. Dr Louay says he was recruited into the ranks of Ansar al-Sunna, one of Iraq's most lethal Islamist groups, in August 2005 during a stint at Kirkuk children's hospital.

5. You know, I'm not sure I see the subtle difference...
You know, as I get older, I'm not sure I see the subtle differences
any more between killing people by shooting them in the face with
a rifle bullet in a military action, killing them later in hospital
by lethal injection, or killing them by cutting off the supplies to
their country so they all starve or die of cholera or dysentery from
contaminated water.

I'm not sure there's any honor in any of those killings, even if they
give you medals for doing it in styles one and three.

8. Well put, Tesha. Especially #3 ...
"or killing them by cutting off the supplies to
their country so they all starve or die of cholera or dysentery from
contaminated water."

Actually, the evil is compounded by being able to perpetrate it from 40,000 feet in the air or, as far as that goes, by means of an order from a mad and idiotic President or a sadistic Secretary of Death.

11. the honor goes to those who put their lives on the line against
an invading or occupying force. Maybe this guy thought he was doing an honorable thing, but the people he murdered were no longer combatants, and were his fellow countrymen.

Every man woman and child has the right and duty to defend their homes and family against those who aim to kill or enslave them. Our soldiers were lied to, and were operating under the belief they were defending their homeland. They acted honorably. When the learn and accept the truth, will their actions be seen as dishonorable if they continue fighting?

denying a child food and medicine is not honorable.

14. Whatever it takes to justify murder.
Or in this case, justify being a murderer.

18. Do you see self defense as murder?
Do you think the Iraqis were wrong in taking up arms against us? They have killed a lot of our soldiers, many who sincerely believe what bush has told them. I suspect many are having serious doubts, but cannot allow themselves to even harbor doubts about the rightness of what they are doing. Many know now that the war was a lie, but feel a bond with their fellow soldiers and are fighting to stay alive and to keep their friends alive. they are no longer fighting for country, they are fighting for their brothers and sisters so they can all go home alive and well. Mutiny is possible, but it takes coordination, something difficult to do in a controlled military environment.

the murderers are the ones who lied to them and then sent them to kill. It isn't just the president, it is his advisors and the oil companies who pushed for this illegal war. They are no better than the afore mentioned "doctor."

The Iraqis saw yet another world power invading their homeland to steal their oil. Does it make them murderers for defending their country? Yes, the doctor was so wrong by killing the injured men and women under his care. His act was not an act of self defense it was sick.

they say that people below their mid twenties do not have the ability to see the future consequences of their actions (their mortality). That makes them well suited to being soldiers. They have the strength of youth, the strong tribal ties (peer pressure), and no real fear of death. The Army of One ad campaign really plays into that immature thinking. Hopefully these young soldiers will see the light someday.

20. I do not see self defense as murder.
But this man left the battle field and killed the wounded.

You defended him.

This is making headlines because it is abnormal. This man is a serial killer.

It's disturbing that you don't seem to grasp that somethings are not okay, even in war.

21. Oh no, read again. I was saying what he did was wrong.
You might have confused where I was saying that in his mind he might have justified it, but in the end he was wrong. He was killing people not on the battlefield, people who were helpless and under his care. It was sick.

23. Well put........
The older military men I know - mostly Marines - are united in their lack of support for Fuckface and what he's done in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they are all - to a man - convinced that we're going after Iran.

They do, though, back up their boys and girls in the field. They are Marines forever.

Youth has no concept of mortality. That's why the pilots are kids, the soldiers are kids, the ones who believe - so sweetly, so innocently - what they are told by their government, lack the years, the frame of reference, the matured brains and minds that allow them to know when they're being lied to.

They're being lied to.

Someday, if they live, they will see the light, and, like my Marine pals, all of whom are officers in the Reserve - up to a Lt. Col. - will resign their commissions rather than go over to Iraq. They are all, by the way, Desert Storm vets.

You wrote a great post. Thank you.

3. shit happens when you go around taking over countries and
killing over 200 thousand citizens-
Everyone's related to someone--or knows someone who's been "beheaded" by one of those
cluster bombs or daisy cutters or MOABs dropped by the U.S.--shock and awe!!
I'm sure some of them remember Abu garib and the torture of children in front of their parents
I'd be some of them remember:( the Nerve gas and White Phosphorous in Fallujah-
--every living thing died including the insects.

What's surprising is not the resentment and hatred directed toward those people associated with the "invaders",
but the lack of ability to forsee any of it by those who masterminded the operation in the first place!!
---the greedy bazstaaaards. ---all for the oil.

Troops home now.

16. Parts wrong
This guy was killing his own countrymen. No way this is anything but murder. He could have picked up a gun and fought like a man. This is no different than if we were to begin summarily executing suspected insurgents, on the spot.

As for nerve gas you may want to read up. Nerve agents are terrain denial weapons. They leave a chemical fingerprint. It is pretty easy to find organophosphate chemical traces months after they have been used. Your claim is not based in reality. If you watched the raw feeds from falluja you would see plenty of dogs running around eating crap, including corpses. They would be dead from any nerve agent in our arsenal.

WP is a weapon of war. When you go to war you kill people. I see no distinction in WP, or being killed by an IED. Dead is dead.

Should we be there, no.

If you want to be tinfoil hatty you can see that the oil production from Iraq has DROPPED thus raising the price of crude. Maybe that was the plan...

6. Don't he know that this is the job of insurance companies?
If them Iraqis would stop the insurrection and just allow the US GOP economic/health care model to set up, then the insurance based health care would take care of this. Instead of one lone Dr the medical/insurance killing machine could do the job much more efficiently AND be labeled "freedom".

10. True.
Our uncivilized country allows republinazi HMOs & PPOs to practice medicine w/o a license and deny treatment to people. Also, the non-wealthy are allowed to die for lack of enough money to pay for medical treatment here.

The guy killed 43 people, and nobody noticed.

Just one more example of Bush's outsourcing plan run awry.

> How badly are we supervising these hospitals?

What are 43 (hmm, interesting number) more deaths among tens
of thousands (of soldiers, cops, and civilians)? Really, who's
going to quickly notice that a soldier originally brought in
in pieces in a basket has now finally "succumbed to his injuries"?
Odds are he was likely to anyway.

President 43 certainly doesn't notice when soldiers die.

This is worse than if he out-and-out gunned them down in the streets. The people he killed were supposed to be safe. It's one thing to be in open opposition and kill them, and quite another to betray your profession like this.

He makes me sick. :puke: :puke: :puke:

with the expectation of being made well. You're at your most vulnerable, and its a horrifying betrayal of that vulnerability for the person charged with curing you to actively try to kill you instead (unless that is your explicit wish (assisted suicide).

Do you consider hospitals legitimate targets for organized violence (war, insurgency, whatever)?

25. Great. Now, I suppose they're going to suspect doctors
More bad news for the already beleaguered doctors in Iraq. There will be arrests and accusations.

The few people who are doing some good in that country are now going to be targets.
