Here Are Pulitzer Prize Winners, Announced Monday

NEW YORK

The New York Times and The Washington Post were the top winners as this year’s Pulitzer Prizes for journalism were announced at Columbia University shortly after 3 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon. In an unusual event, there were two winners in two categories, including the coveted Public Service slot -- shared by the Times-Picayune in New Orleans and the Sun-Herald in Biloxi, Miss.

The Post won four prizes and the Times won three.

Here is the list of winners in the journalism categories, selected by the Pulitzer Board from three finalists in each category picked by judges:

1. The (Toledo) Blade Misses Out on Pulitzer Prize (for COINGATE)

TOLEDO -- Following on the heels of The Blade's win of a Pulitzer for its Tiger Force series, the paper had hoped its Coingate series would win the prize this year for public service reporting. But that was not to be. The prize went to The Times-Picayune of New Orleans and the Sun Herald of Gulfport, Mississippi, who shared the Pulitzer announced Monday. The newspapers took the prize for their coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

3. K&R'd. You realize if Katrina hadn't hit, Coingate would have made

the national radar screen with a Pulitzer on its coverage. This is truly indicative of Coingate's legitimacy. (Not that we on DU doubted, but I've heard conservative family members poo-poo Coingate because "I never heard about it on tv or in the paper." :grr: )

As I work on my novel, I am constantly amazed by how unimportant, unambitious and uninspiring the winners for fiction have been over the last few years. So, as I sez, Ahm gonna finnish that there novel and ahm gonna git me wonna them there Pulitzers by nekst year!

5. K&R'd in this new thread because of the significance of Coingate

coverag nomination. I mean, I'm all over the Katrina coverage, totally grateful for the good work of the Sun-Herald and the Times-Picayune. But really, it couldn't be that hard to cover the largest natural disaster happening in your neighborhood that the entire nation is talking about. Whereas covering Noe's dirty dealings was much less glamorous, much more significant to the state of our so-called democracy, and much less reported nationally.

- WASHINGTON (AP) - Political columnist Jack Germond, Charles Osgood of CBS News and the Ohio editor whose paper broke the state's "coingate" scandal are among the winners of this year's National Press Foundation awards.

Ron Royhab, executive editor of The (Toledo) Blade, will receive the Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year Award. Royhab oversaw a series of stories that showed gross mismanagement of a $50 million investment by the state into rare coins.

Beginning in April, The Blade revealed numerous problems with the coin investment by the state insurance fund for injured workers. The fund was managed by Toledo-area coin dealer Tom Noe, a prominent GOP contributor to state and federal candidates.

As the newspaper continued its reporting, the fund's longtime administrator was forced out after attorneys for Noe said up to $13 million in the investment was missing. State and federal authorities began investigating...

Sun-Herald and T-P were amazing with their coverage ... like a lifeline (particularly for people from that area and displaced). All of the final candidates were quite worthy for public service.

Cunningham stories honored for excellence

The San Diego Union-Tribune and Copley News Service shared a Pulitzer Prize yesterday for reporting that disclosed the worst case of bribe-taking in the history of Congress and led to the imprisonment of a corrupted lawmaker and war hero.

Too bad the North County Times and Voice of San Diego, which initially broke the Cunningham corruption story, didn't share in this prize. Still, the conservative-slanted Union-Tribune showed some rare courage in delving deeply into the corruption of a Republican Congressman. Let's hope this encourages the UT and other journalists to expose the truth about other crooked officials.
