Bush Reaches New Lows on Ratings of Terrorism, Energy
Overall job approval shows little change, at 36%

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll, conducted April 10-13, 2006 finds little change in President George W. Bush's overall job approval ratings, with 36% of Americans saying they approve and 59% saying they disapprove. The current 36% approval ties for the lowest of Bush's entire administration. Overall, Bush's job approval ratings have been extremely steady since February, ranging between 36% and 38% across the five most recent polls.

In a separate USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted April 7-9, 2006, 45% of Americans said they approve of the way Bush is handling terrorism, the lowest rating on terrorism of his entire presidency. Terrorism still remains Bush's strongest issue of the six tested in the poll, while Americans are most negative on his handling of the situation in Iraq (32%), healthcare policy (30%), energy policy (29%), and immigration (29%). The president's energy policy ratings are also at a new low, but by only one point; Bush's current Iraq rating ties for the lowest of his administration.

4. That's my knee jerk reaction, too
"America hates your guts". But my in-laws still worship the toilet paper he wipes his ass with. I'm totally bewildered by them and carefully avoid the subject of Bush. They're actually bright, funny and enjoyable people - as long as you don't bring up politics. AND they're atheists! It's a strange burden for me. My parents on the other hands despise him. My dad is a retired NASA genius who knows more than I can comprehend about the gutting of NASA's environmental programs to further the agenda of the Bush Regime.

11. How They Do It....
Guns, gays, abortion and..... the big one: fear. Add a lot of dishonesty and out-and-out cheating, and they are tough to beat. We need monitors at every single polling place this coming November. We should also insist on a paper back-up ballot as proof of one's vote.
I don't trust these Texan Machiavellis to play fair. They sure haven't so far.

17. Probably bigger than you think
There are quite a few pure capitalists out there out to make a buck who could care less about religion.

I never think of capitalists calling themselves Atheists, though. Bad for business.

26. They apparently have no fear they will ever have to atone for their
crimes against humanity. It would seem they don't believe there will ever be a "Judgement Day," as do fundie Christians.
Looks as if they are pretty sure they ARE the highest authority everywhere, forever.

7. My gut...
feeling tells me is way below 36%--more like 25%--the MSM is just not reporting such a number...come on if ol' Dicky is at 16-18% then Chimpie's gotta be just slightly above in the 20s.

12. MotherJones has a great new article if you interested in ALL the polls...

History Ambushes the Bush Administration

Commentary: On the domestic and foreign fronts -- from triumph to near collapse in less than five years.

By Tom Engelhardt

April 17, 2006

{Note for readers: This is the stand-alone conclusion to a two-part dispatch, the first of which was published two weeks ago.}

You can count on one thing. All over Washington, Republicans are at least as capable as I am of watching and interpreting the polling version of the smash-up of the Bush administration. With each new poll, the numbers creep lower yet. Presidential approval in the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll dropped another 3% in the last month and now sits at 38%, while disapproval of the President continues to strengthen -- 47% of Americans now "strongly disapprove" of the President's handling of the presidency, only 20% "strongly approve." (62%, by the way, disapprove of the President's handling of the war in Iraq.)

Behind these figures lurk worse ones. When asked, for instance, whether they would vote for a generic Democrat or Republican in the upcoming midterm elections, those polled chose the generic Democrat by a startling 55-40%, the largest such gap yet. In addition, Democrats have now become the default party Americans "trust" almost across the board on issues, even in this poll edging the Republicans out by a single percentage point on the handling of terrorism.

Commenting on a recent Ipsos-AP poll showing Democrats and Republicans in a tie on the question, "Who do you trust to do a better job of protecting the country," GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio said: "These numbers are scary. We've lost every advantage we've ever had. The good news is Democrats don't have much of a plan. The bad news is they may not need one." Surprisingly, despite the way Democrats have shied off the subject, a near-majority (45%) of those polled were also in favor of some kind of Feingold-like censure of the President for listening in on citizens without prior court approval.

The words connected to almost any new poll these days are "hit a new low." Other recent new lows were reached by that AP-Ipsos poll and by a Fox News poll where presidential approval was at 36%. Or take a recent state poll in California, where Bush has admittedly never been a popular figure. Still, a 32% approval rating? Or check out the trajectory of Bush polling approval numbers from September 11, 2001 to today. Despite various bumps and plateaus -- including a conveniently engineered, Karl Rovian bump just before election 2004 -- it's been a slow, ever-downward path that, in early 2005, dipped decisively under 50%; by the end of 2004 had crossed the 40% threshold; and is, at present, in the mid-30% range.

29. Thanks for that. I love that graphic.
It says so much. All the HIGHS are artificial. They are reactions to events less than a reflection on Bush as a human being and leader. The LOWS reflect that.

14. These people make me sick. 29% think Bush is doing a good
job on energy because they have to pay for their own gas and they're pissed off. But 45 % think he doing a good job on terror because they DON'T have to pay with their own sons and daughters and they're god damn happy about that.
