(Katherine) Harris injects $3 million into Senate campaign
Tuesday, April 18, 2006

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris raised slightly more than $1 million for the first quarter of this year and pumped another $3 million of her own money into her campaign for the U.S. Senate, according to reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission.

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson of Brevard County raised $2.9 million and has $10.3 million in cash on hand.

Harris, R-Longboat Key, reported she had $3.7 million in cash on hand.

Experts predict this year's race could cost each candidate about $20 million.

Look at it this way - at least she'll be helping the local economy (pizza parlors, Kinkos, etc)

that she was actually making some forward motion. Perhaps just "staggering"...

6. Harris' activities alone call for campaign finance reform
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 01:46 PM by Selatius
I believe that if you are going to run for a federal seat, then if you are able to collect X number of, say, 5 dollar donations in your district, agree to abide by spending limits if any, agree to forego any outside contributions, then your campaign should be subsidized by taxpayer dollars.

BTW, I doubt she'd be able to collect enough donations to get any funding at all if this hypothetical system existed.

19. This is a loan, right?
She can't GIVE it to the campaign, so she has to pay it back to herself.

I've never understood how this crap works.

26. Many candidates loan money
Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 12:01 PM by JPZenger
I don't think there is any limit on the amount of money that a person can loan or give to their own campaign. Many people loan it to their campaign. If they win, it is easy to get bigwigs to contribute to your campaign afterwards so that the candidate can get paid back. However, no one wants to donate to a loser, so the loans getting written off if you lose.

22. See? What did I tell you?
"Pride goeth before a fall"

I KNEW she would whip out the old pocketbook. There is no way she's going to give up, now. She wants it. She wants it bad.....the power.....the glory....the adulation.....

Mark my words, she will spend every dime. Then they'll sweep her out of the way, around September.

32. great point. Obviously, they have nothing else to do with their ample
time and money, like help with charities and good causes.

This is one reason Diana was beloved---she spent her time and money helping war victims, refugees and the poor.

34. Obviously, there must be many more perks besides the
"meager" salary they get from the U.S. taxpayers that make it very worthwhile. Wouldn't it be nice to see an in-depth article on that by a real journalist?

42. We've got to STOP her!
If she runs out of money she's gonna go straight for the hides of 101 Dalmation puppies, skin them and start selling them as coats on EBAY!

How will she pay for the facelifts? Believe me, we don't want to see this woman BROKE and with no ability to maintain her "appearance" with her stable of plastic surgeons..

Kidding, actually the phrase, "Spend money like a drunken sailor on leave" comes to mind :)
