Two surveys show that the U.S. labor market is tightening and that employers may soon experience a serious shortage of skilled workers.

Chicago's Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. released two surveys Tuesday, one of job seekers and the other of human resources executives, that provide evidence of an emerging talent shortage.

The firm's quarterly Job Market Index survey of 3,000 job seekers found that among those winning jobs in the first quarter, the median job search lasted just 2.7 months, more than a month shorter than the peak of 4.0 months reached in the third quarter of 2004. It was the lowest job-search time recorded since the second quarter of 2001, when search times fell to a record low of 2.1 months.

1. Sounds good for once for us IT folks.

When Bush took office there was 2400 jobs in IT in Florida per day at http://www.florida.computerjobs.com/ but within months it was down to 300-400.... Today I checked and they are up to 1200. Not back to Clinton days but not bad.

2. Most are still "extreme niche" jobs

In my area, anyway.

They're the jobs that are looking for 10 years in Java, ASP/Cold Fusion/PHP, SQL Server, Atari 800 connectivity with Shining Path Linux, AS400 with EMACS, programming the chips in Teddy Ruxpin dolls, certification in VCR repair, and modern fingernail sculpture.

Still, the increase is nice to see. If I'm ever employable again, my rates will certainly be going up.

I work in high tech, though in finance, and know that the engineers in my company make less than 5 years ago.

i think we'll see the graying of the employment pool as we boomers get old and there isn't enough genXers around to take our places

not to mention so many us will have to work til we drop considering the state of pension savings in the country and the probablity that SocSec will be gutted

8. This is total bull. Jobs are typically created toward the end of....

...the first quarter based on new calendar year budgets, while jobs are typically much harder to land during the third quarter because that's when managers typically take their vacations.

And what kind of jobs were being discussed? Were they primarily low-wage jobs? I bet they were.
