New jobs will go to India, Bush warns US
Washington, April 19: President George W Bush has warned the country's schoolchildren that if they did not have the skills needed to compete with their counterparts from India and China, new jobs would go to those countries.

The President was addressing a magnet school in Rockville, Maryland, on Tuesday, stressing among other things, the criticality of such subjects as Mathematics and Science.

"If you're living in Midland, Texas, or living in Montgomery County, Maryland, it's important to understand, if children don't have those skill sets needed to compete with a child from India or a child from China, the new jobs will be going there," Bush told the students.

74. And they dared to call Clinton a waffler and Kerry a flip-flopper.
Bush has done more to undermine our education system in Math and Science than any other president by bending to the will of the Intelligent Design/Creationist, by gagging our scientists and by keeping real science from the public in regards to imporant information like global warming.

What a bastard.

112. Look, i have worked with several people from India. They are nice enough
but not any brighter or more hard-working than the rest of the people in my organization. Bush is leading the American children into a morass of low self-esteem by using such threats and building unnecessary resentment among them to boot.

66. a little grim humor
;) someone else was thinking the same thing:

>Washington D.C. - Congress today announced that the Office of President of
>the United States will be outsourced to overseas as of August 30. The move
>is being made to save $400K a year in salary, a record $521 Billion in
>deficit expenditures and related overhead.

>"The cost savings will be quite significant" says Congressman Adam Smith
>(R-Wash) who, with the aid of Congress research arm, the General Accounting
>Office has studied outsourcing of American jobs extensively. "We simply can
>no longer afford this level of outlay and remain competitive on the world
>stage," Congressman Smith said. Exporting American jobs has been a popular
>trend lately, ironically at the urging of President Bush.

>Mr. Bush was informed by email this morning of the termination of his
>position. He will receive health coverage, expenses and salary until his
>final day of employment. After that, with a two week waiting period, he
>will then be eligible for $240 a week from unemployment insurance for 13
>weeks.

>Unfortunately he will not be able to receive state Medicaid health
>insurance coverage as his unemployment benefits are over the required
>limit. "I'm in shock," Mr. Bush stated. "I thought for sure I'd have some
>job security around this here place. I have no idea what I'll do now," he
>further lamented.

>Preparations have been under way for some time for the job move.

>Sanji Gurvinder Singh of Indus Teleservices, Mumbai, India, will be
>assuming the Office of President of the United States as of September 1.
>Mr. Singh was born in the United States while his parents were here on
>student visas, thus making him eligible for the position. He will receive a
>salary of $320 USD a month but with no health coverage or other benefits.

>Due to the time difference between the US and India, Mr. Singh will be
>working primarily at night, when offices of the US Government will be open.
>"I am excited to serve in this position," Mr. Singh stated in an exclusive
>interview. "Working nights will let me keep my day job at the American
>Express call center. I always knew I could be President someday."

>Congress stressed patience when calling Mr. Singh as he may not be fully
>aware of all the issues involved with his new position. A Congressional
>Spokesperson noted that Mr. Singh has been given a script tree to follow
>which will allow him to respond to most topics of concern. The Spokesperson
>further noted that "additional savings will be realized as these scripting
>tools have already been used previously by Mr. Bush here in the US. Such
>scripts will enable Mr. Singh to provide an answer without having to fully
>understand the issue itself."

>Congress continues to explore other outsourcing possibilities including
>that of Vice-President and most Cabinet positions.

jobs were outsourced to India because of cheap labor.

Guess the workers in other countries that are getting our jobs will be the only ones able to afford all the refridgerators, electronics, cars and such that used to be made here.

Big American companies have turned into middlemen who manage production. In addition to call centers, almost all of our production has gone overseas -- from cars to anything that can be sold.

The raw materials (iron, wood, composites) are shipped to other countries where they have cheap or slave labor who assemble them and then the goods are shipped back here as cheap imports and sold at god-*** Wall-Mart.

When will people wake up??

9. At this point in our history, *'s admonishment is like telling a kid to
eat all his/her vegetables to grow up to be strong and healthy when you know the kid has a huge malignant tumor. In other words, the fix is in and it wouldn't matter if each student was PhD material. Jobs are going to be outsourced, not for the sake of quality, but so CEOs can squeeze more profits from saving more on labor. Don't get me wrong: China and India in a lot of sectors put more emphasis on education than this country does and a lot of kids are academically more advanced than our kids (NCLB or otherwise). However, it is almost cruel to have * tell kids to work hard to keep jobs in this country as if it were their civic duty and if the jobs still move, it's their fault for not studying hard enough.

I'm pissed.

11. Let me give YOU an edumacation Mr. Bush
Here is the real problem George

1. There is, encouraged by the right-wing, widespread anti-intellectualism. It's pervasive in our society.

2. You and the right-wing are anti-science and devalue science. You scoff at long established scientific thought

3. You and the right-wing are doing everything you can to destroy free public education, the very thing that made our country great ( at one time)

4. No Child Left Behind - 'nuf said

5. You and your buddies are cutting funding for higher education. Students and their parents from middle income and down are strapped with massive debt if they even manage to fund their education.

6. You and your neo-con buddies are spending money on wars and killing our kids instead of educating them.

So, I'd say you are the problem, Mr. Bush. ( It's all I can do not to type a string of curse words)

13. Children do not give themselves skill sets; public education does.
So kids are supposed to be acquiring these skill sets on their own? And of course they should all enlist in the military to earn money for college. When will the recruiters start promising them a posthumous degree to be carved on their headstones. Let's see, for fatalities from IEDs, we'll award an engineering degree; for door-to-door sweeps in Fallujah, it will be an MBA; anyone killed by a car bomb in Baghdad will get summa cum laude. Recent studies have shown that in the good ole' U S of A, top jobs go to those who have elitist family connections. It's not whether you have a degree from a top school, it's whether you have a pissant degree from some party school AND a grandfather, dad or uncle with $$$ and the right political/social connections.

And to the extent that the GOP pushes and funds charter schools, the public schools' budgets are reduced for every kid they lose to a charter school (or the pathetic "home schooling" by unqualified parents). Bush did a crappy job in education for Texas when he was governor. But it was just a rehearsal for how he's screwing every schoolchild in America.

16. "Just like as what's happening in this school," Bush said.
How VERY interesting that he is quoted in an Indian news source, and not a U.S. news source. Since when do Indian news reporters follow Bush into some little school in Rockville, MD.?

PLUS, take a look at this gramatically incorrect quote the Indian source included:

"And so, in order to make sure we remain the leader of the world, we have got to continue our focus in education on high standards, accountability, and a new focus and intense focus on math and science, just like as what's happening in this school," he said.

Bush is the ultimate CRETIN. Even in a speech on education, he sounds like a grade school dropout calling in to some conservative radio talkshow:

". . . .just like as what's happening . . . " It's great that the Indian reporter did not clean up the quote, but let his whole country laugh at Bush's verbal non-skills.

40. What B.S. The jobs haven't been going to India because of
"skill sets". It's because workers in India will take the job for a fourth the salary of a comparable American worker. Database administrator in America $80,000. In India $20,000.
When I retired from my company, there were twelve DBA's on site. One year later, ten of the jobs have been outsourced, while the hardware has remained on-site in the U.S.A. (That also means that we could have been telecommuting from our homes instead of driving two hours a day at our own expense.)

45. It is time to put the hurt on outscourcing and offshoring.
Many, many industries get tax rebates and other government emoluments in the name of "job creation". The problem is that there are no repercussions for these companies when they kill jobs and send them offshore. I propose a tax penalty, per job offshored, for any company that engages in this practice. In this manner, there will be a negative reinforcement for this behavior on the part of companies and less of the money "saved" will be available for management to skim and put in their greedy pockets.

It is well known that when jobs are offshored, a significent amount of the money "saved" goes to various executive remunieration schemes. Take the personal profit out of it, make it painful and they will think twice. It is perverse that companies continue to get tax breaks on jobs that don't exist in the US. It has to end and it must be painful, to create an aversion on the part of companies.

Bring The Pain. They will understand that.

US keen to offshore R&D to India

Updated: Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 0613 hours IST

R&D SAN FRANCISCO, APRIL 17: Move over Silicon Valley, the new buzzword in the Indo-US lexicon is biotechnology. American biotech companies are keen to off-shore their research and development to India to reduce costs. Facilitating such a move, was the agreement of the bilateral Joint Working Group on Biotechnology on working out protocols for the transfer of bio-materials and clinical trials of medicines to India.

According to Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, the JWG, which is part of the bilateral High Technology Cooperation Group, decided at its April 5 meeting to prepare a roadmap in the next three months for allowing companies to export or import bio-materials without the fear of being hobbled by the Bush administration’s dual use restrictions.

77. And Bush gives biotech companies nice excuses to outsource overseas...
... when they try and "clamp down" here in the U.S. on stem cell research. Can't allow that here. Just let them do it overseas where it will be cheaper anyway! That makes it OK when it's "out of sight, out of mind". Now, Bush is thinking, if we can find a way for the federal courts to strike down California's stem-cell research initiative so that we can complete this strategy. Need to finish off the sell-out so my drug company exec buddies can get richer and make us Rethug party leaders richer too!

On 20% of the pay, you really would be living out of your car in most American cities, certainly in the places that would hire software developers.

69. I am not a software expert but I often wonder about them
Computer software engineers and programmers have many entrepreneurs among their ranks. To me that seems a field one could adapt and grow into all kinds of spheres.

Ten years ago I had no functioning relationship using complex computer diagnostics and Diesel truck repairs. Now 25-30% of my time is spent working on that marriage between the two and my employment situation is more secure than it ever has been (with 30 years as a truck mechanic). Like it's even fun to laugh at the idea my current employer would even think to try and lay me off. I would be able to pick up a job tomorrow if needed.

Yea, I have lived on only 20% of what I make, probably could now but that is not anything I worry about now. The desire to be like others is what often cripples people

There needs to be a war to stop it. The best way to keep a country secure is to be independent as possible. The traitors selling out the US should all be put in jail if you ask me. I am an independent person that has found that way of being, that way of being independent, is one of the best ways to be, if one wants to prepare for the future.

The corporations are selling everybody out to try and make us all dependent on them as much as possible

I am an independent person, and self employed for that very reason.

BUT, we are still affected by government policies that favor corporations over people and create underfunded schools, healthcare, imperialist wars, and ongoing poverty.

While I minimize my participation in corporatism, I am still affected by it, as is my family, my community, my state, my country and the world. No man (or woman) is an island. We are reluctant participants in the bad effects of outsourcing and all the other greedy, destructive things the neocons are doing to this country.

of the pieces when it does that is the question ? I do know that what is happening is mostly because of greed but greed often has a way of turning around an biting one back in the ass.

As for being independent I only depend on others because it is impossible to function in todays society without going that way. Independence gives me a sense of security and pride that no one can take away. I try to never let others do important or even menial tasks for me or my family if I can do them myself and or my family can help with. I am city dweller that should of been a farmer.

80. It's like Rome in the last days of the republic.
Aristocrats drove the free-holding peasants who gave the Roman Republic it's early vitality of thier land and replacing them with slaves and serfs. The former free holders moved to the cities were they joined the ranks of the unemployed/underemployed ubrban poor (latin proletarii, literally "those who contribute nothing except children," the origin of our word proletariat) the proletarii were kept under control with, as everyone knows, free bread and circuses. In the West, we have east Asians as our "slaves" and people working McJobs as our proletarii. Instead of contiuting to the state's economy, they became a burden on it. Such disaffected areas are breeding grounds for religousity as they reject the rational secular humanism of the elites they hate (in the Roman Empire this was Stoicism), and move towards mysticism and salvationist cults. The rise of the Religious Right and mysticist cults like Petacostalism is a result of the rejection of an elite that is seen as the cause of all thier trouble, and they are being conned to to the bidding of the people they hate by beng told propaganda about the "Liberul Elite." Marx was wrong that class struggle results in the economic victory of the underdog, it leads to the ultimate collapse of a civilization. The elites sew the civilization's death shrowd of a universal state (like the Roman Empire, and which in our case will be a corporate state run by plutocrats) and the proletariat conquers the civilization spiritually by the creation of a new great religioin that comes to dominate the dying civilization and lays the foundations of the decendant civilization or civilizations.

As production jobs move overseas, the engineering jobs eventually follow them. We're seeing that now. A country that allows itself to be stripped of its capacity for making stuff will also lose its place in designing stuff.

Individuals -- students and workers -- can't really do much more than try to adjust to conditions created by much larger and more powerful entities like governments and corporations. Bush has a hell of a nerve blaming this on us.

93. Utterly irresponsible.
It's not competition when Indian workers are always going to be cheaper. It's not competition when you're giving them the R&D future that we should be getting our hands on. It's not competition because we don't MAKE anything HERE anymore. It's not competition because they're already getting the jump on sciences such as nano- and Bio-technology while were trying to destroy science to believe a story and appease a bunch of toupeed wackjobs with crosses. It's not competition when you enable corporations to displace thousands of American workers either by offshoring or inshoring via tax breaks and loopholes. It's not competition when you have nothing on the near or far horizon to replace the outgoing jobs

What it IS, however, is the destruction of the American middle class, exactly as the well-monied Robber Baron Republican'ts want it. Offshoring helps NO one but the rich and drives down wages in every job they can ship over or bring here. "Everyone in their station and have the good sense to STAY there." A fearful, low paid, divided and powerless middle class is an OBEDIENT middle class.

This isn't about hatred of anyone; Indians are simply embracing the opportunity given to them by our companies.

Unfortunately, know that it comes at a huge human price, one which is going to grow more than dissipate. Come to Northeast Ohio and the ghost-towns that litter it sometime and look at the cost. Go to any of the small towns in America that used to thrive, but now have boarded up weed-infested everything. Look at all the vacant office space in most mid-market cities and tell me how "progressive" it is that this dickhead presidope cares more about the events and markets of countries that start with an "I" than he does our own.

It's all about MONEY (and benefits). Bush would outsource EINSTEIN for a buck.

113. Jeez.
"that if they did not have the skills needed to compete with their counterparts from India and China, new jobs would go to those countries."
Hey, dipshit Dimson, does that mean a child from China or India can come over here and take over your job and you can JUST GO AWAY to India or China and stay there permanently and get some education and then work for two dollars an hour? Really, really work, hard work! 'Cause they work real hard, something you've never had to do a day in your priviledged life.
Mofo!

115. Holy Shit. An earthquake of magnanimous proportions
must be about to strike in the middle of Arizona. I actually agree with something George Bush said!

So, he's identified a problem. Let's see what he's going to do about it. Maybe, he should start a program that leaves no child behind. A program that ensures all children receive the high quality education they need and deserve by paying teachers a good wage and raising the bar on educational standards and allows teachers to teach information needed to survive in the real world and not just teach to a test. Oh, and, he should actually fund it with the veracity of which he has funded the destruction of Mesopotamia.

What? There's no oil in school? Ah, well. There goes that idea.

120. Yet his people said in Feb 2004 outsourcing was a GOOD thing
Can't have it both ways, chimpboy...what kid wants to go into a field that will be outsourced. I can round up several thousand adult Texans who took math/science seriously as kids and look where it got them..unemployed from layoffs/outsourcing.

The movement of U.S. factory jobs and white-collar work to other countries is part of a positive transformation that will enrich the U.S. economy over time, even if it causes short-term pain and dislocation, the Bush administration said yesterday.

The embrace of foreign "outsourcing," an accelerating trend that has contributed to U.S. job losses in recent years and become an issue in the 2004 elections, is contained in the president's annual report to Congress on the health of the U.S. economy.

"Outsourcing is just a new way of doing international trade," said N. Gregory Mankiw, chairman of Bush's Council of Economic Advisors, which prepared the report. "More things are tradable than were tradable in the past. And that's a good thing."

121. It has nothing to do with skills.
Too many skilled people have been out of jobs continually since the late 90s. It has nothing to do with skills and everything to do with corporations being catered to to cut the bottom line. But then again, Bush wouldn't know outsourcing if it bit him in his well-cushioned ass.
