TOPEKA, Kan. - Invading Iraq was a mistake, and the U.S. should set a timetable for withdrawing its troops, Democrat Nancy Boyda said as she kicked off a rematch campaign against Republican Rep. Jim Ryun.
Ryun captured 56 percent of the vote against Boyda in winning re-election in the 2nd Congressional District in 2004. He supported President Bush's decision to go to war three years ago, viewing it as a necessary part of a global fight against terrorism.
About 150 supporters joined Boyda on Wednesday for a Statehouse rally starting her campaign, where she accused Ryun of being a "big money" candidate who had hurt families and small businesses by backing Bush's economic policies.
She invoked the spirit of Kansas populists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, saying the political situation is as bad now as it was then, when "it was the robber barons who were in control."
