Senate bill shorts gear for troops

WASHINGTON - A Senate measure to fund the war in Iraq would chop money for troops' night vision equipment and new battle vehicles but add $230 million for a tilt-rotor aircraft that has already cost $18 billion and is still facing safety questions.

President Bush's request for the emergency appropriations to cover costs of the continuing war and Hurricane Katrina recovery operations included no money for the troubled V-22 Osprey, which takes off and lands like a helicopter but flies like a plane.

The Marine Corps, however, followed up with a letter to lawmakers endorsing additional V-22s, noting that it is the only active production line capable of replacing four Vietnam War-era CH-46 choppers lost since Sept. 11, 2001.

Critics maintain that it's still a curious choice to be funded in a bill whose defining purpose is to replace equipment worn out or destroyed in Iraq.

2. Support the Troops!
Put a $1.50 magnet or car!

As for paying a few more taxes to make sure they have up-to-date equipment? Oh well, screw them, they signed up for the Army.

(Please tell me I don't need a :sarcasm: tag)

On a recent afternoon, Sgt. Daniel Muns, a soccer coach from Columbus,
and two other soldiers from Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment,
were training soldiers from the Lincoln, Neb.,

9. "They've hijacked the bill to spend money on their toys"
- Steve Ellis of Taxpayers for Common Sense.
That statement basically sums it up.

Not only does the V-22's manufacturer get "emergency" funding,
but Boeing also gets cash to start making more C-17 transport
planes. The Pentagon sure has its priorities straight. :sarcasm:

So what states are the Tilt Rotors built in. Hmm Boeing and Bell are in Texas and Illinois? Looks like the long road to finally replace the bullet riddled 46 is finally about to arrive. They were pushing these in the 80's when congress decided the F18 was needed to replace the F4. The 46 pilots have been flying crap, reworked crap and refitted crap since Vietnam.

12. Interesting choice of dates.
I wasn't aware we lost a CH-46 on September 11, 2001.

Why not put 12.31.1999?

it is the only active production line capable of replacing four Vietnam War-era CH-46 choppers lost since Sept. 11, 2001.

13. It is. Or why not "since the beginning of the Iraq War"?
Either would be a logical choice, but "since 9/11" has propaganda value.
