Russia Refuses to Ditch Bushehr

Russia on Thursday rejected a U.S. call to end its cooperation with Iran in constructing the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

"The adoption of a commitment on ending cooperation with this or that state in some sphere lies exclusively in the competence of the UN Security Council," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said in a statement. "Up to now, the Security Council has made no decision on ending cooperation with Iran in nuclear energy."

U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday that the United States had called on countries to end all nuclear cooperation with Iran, including work on the Bushehr plant. He also said countries should stop all arms exports to Iran.

Burns said such action would send a message to Tehran that its behavior meant it would no longer be "business as usual." The United States, which believes Iran is intending to make nuclear weapons, has been pushing for tough measures because of Iran's refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment program.

3. Thanks for the update, Sabra.
Bush is playing "Nuclear Poker" with the entire world as his ante. Bush throws down a few more chips, and Iran and China and Russia do the same.

4. We talk of terrorism
I wonder if America is called a terrorist organization now days. In my opinion we literally are. If you look at it from a perspective. We tell countries what they can and what they can't do. If they don't abide we basically go to war with them and change their government and maybe to an extent their culture for them. Is this not a form of terrorism? To force a country to do something against their will. In my opinion it is, but that's just me. An it's not just with Iran and Iraq, which are recent acts of this, but over the years America has picked up the title "The World Police", if you go back in history you see several acts of this. Isn't this a bit hypocritical really? I mean what if the sides flopped. What if it was America being invaded (Probably as foreign countries see it, not being liberated as we see it.), what if it was our government being forced to change, our heritage and culture being altered. Can one really say that they would be comfortable with that situation? I would think not, but then again there's always the possibility. I hear a lot of "Well Iran is a hostile country", I imagine though that foreign countries considered us hostile, their stance would probably come from our recent acts; Afghanistan, Iraq, and now a situation with Iran. Would that mean that we should also be forced to destroy our nuclear weapons, stop all uranium enrichment in America, and not to mention the power shortages that we would start to have if we where stripped of our nuclear power plants.

P.S.
This was not intended to offend anyone, it was merely a speculation. Maybe I will get some feedback for a good discussion/debate on this one. By the way please excuse any grammer/spelling errors in this reply.

5. Hi, IKScott and
welcome to the DU::smoke:

That was a great post, and I agree with you 100%. The U.S. HAS become the "police" of the world. In fact, police might not be the right word. (I can think of a few nouns, but I'll leave it to other DU readers).

Anyway, you will find out so many things that we've done..... it's pretty sad, really. A country can never prosper by tearing down other countries, which is what we're doing. Hopefully lots more people are seeing the light.

7. I agree too. And...
I would think that when any country begins to think of itself as 'different" from the rest of the world, i.e., we don't have to play by the same rules, it is identical to the behavior of tyrants throughout history. As far as I can tell, this is exactly what the PNAC think of the USA. We are the supreme power in the world, and we have an obligation to extend our power and influence throughout the world.
